I just got this plastic reel from Kevin Meyer. This is a 1600' reel that originally had a square hole. With a boring tool it takes only a few minutes to make the hole round. You just have to be careful not to melt the plastic from the heat. I use a spray bottle with water in it to cool the stone and plastic when boring the hole round. It now fits my ST1200 perfectly. I attached a pic so you can see the end result. [Big Grin]

What size Drill Bit or Boring Tool did you use?

A cone shaped grinding stone 1/2" . It expands the hole perfectly. Just be careful not to melt the plastic. I have done this a few times and it works out great. By using a boring stone the reel sets true on the projector and rotates strait without a wobble. [Wink]

But if this used to be a 16mm reel, has something been done to make it narrower?

Hi Adrian, there were some of these spools made for 8mm but
using the square hole for some reason.I remember doing the same thing with a cecolite spool and splitting it to reduce width for
a take up spool, I still have it today.

Just give yo a more idea, even if you made a mistake by drilling to big, I think you can use a 50' feet reel and cut it half. Then glue it on each side of the big reel, to make right size for super 8mm hole.

What do you think, Pat?

I prefer not to use boring tools.

I like exciting tools: the hatchet with the loose head, the circular saw without a guard, all sorts of power tools with defective grounding.

It's not just a job, it's an adventure!

I like tools that do all the work, one does get sick of hammers &
chisels etc, I am with you there Steve, it does make me wish I'd
been born rich instead of just good lookin'.

Someone stated on an earlier thread that these are 8mm width. They were made for, and used with the "extend-a-reel" device. Good job Pat, keeping them useful.

Winbert

I suppose you could do that but it might make the reel to thick to fit on the spindle.

Joe

It was indeed a extend-a-reel. Thanks for the compliment.

Steve

I agree. That's why I did the boring on my lap!
