Is it possible to get some sound out of a film with an external speaker of some sorts? I bought the following projector: http://www.super8dat...elmo_k100sm.htm but I didn't realise it was a silent one.

If you would please scroll down to page 24 of the following PDF: http://www.apecity.com/manuals/pdf/elmo_k-100sm_manual.pdf you'll see that the film projector does allow a recording device, and specifically in this case a tape recorder to record the sound from the film and to play it in sync with the film from the beginning -- of course this would be tedious doing this all of the time.

However, would it be possible to get a tape recorder and insert a cable in the projector and the tape recorder and then insert a speaker cable in the headphone jack of the tape recorder which will, I hope, emit sound.

Hopefully I'm still in luck. If this is possible could you redirect me to some speakers and a tape recorder? Thanks.

The sound is recorded on a track along the pictures. If there is no head to read it (which is the case on silent projectors), it is impossible to hear anything else that the sound of the motor.

Thanks for the reply. Is there a way to modify this projector cheaply so that it can play sound, or should I just buy a new projector with sound?

I would advise you to buy another projector and to keep this one for projecting silent films. It is not impossible (as I could read) to transform some kinds of silent projectors (I don't know if yours is in this case) in sound ones but of course it is not easy and it is done by people who have enough knowledges to do it and do it (I think) more for the fun that for economical reasons.

You can use a tape recorder with your projector, but you will need the special lead for the connection, almost impossible to find unless you can make your own, providing there is a wiring diagram shown in the instruction book.

The tape recorder will have its own speaker, you will not get sufficient volume from a loud speaker plugged into the earphone jack.

This all would be a tour de force for you, and as mentioned by Dominique you should really buy a sound projector.
