OK- I managed to fix my sound issue by adjusting the pots as suggested. I decided to put new belts on my Sankyo 700. Carefully watched where they should go and now...
The projector plays normally for about 5 seconds then gradually slows down. It will eventually pick up to almost normal then slow to a crawl. If I shut down and turn back on the same thing happens again.
What gives??

Maybe you put a "round" belt inside of a "flat" one. I did the same mistake and had some slow movments. I put two drops of sewing machine oil where the two metal sticks (I don't know how it is called in English)turn and it improved the movment but not enough to fix it completely. Of course, your problem may be something completely different but if you noticed the trouble just after replacing the belts it is more than probably the source of what's going wrong and something to investigate about first.

Ah-ha interesting turn here. I just tried a different film and it played just fine. I did adjust the pots a bit and added a few drops of oil. Could it be I have a "sticky" film? I noticed it does hang up in the same parts each time...

I would be surprised if a film could slow a projector down. But if your problem is fixed, that's the point :-)

I don't get it. Still getting slow down on several reels. Plays fine for a few minutes then slows to near stop, then it kicks back to normal. Is the belt too tight?
It's a square belt. I did try flexing it a bit and then putting it back on. It helped for awhile then right back to wear it was.
Ah-hah again! The voltage was set to 110. I changed it to 117 and got better results but then switched to 125 and ran a reel with no trouble. Did a bit of spot greasing too where some old grease had caked. Now to check back and see if this all keeps up tomorrow...
