I have a Bolex SP8E which is a Eumig under its skin. The gate became a little fuzzy so I decided to remove it for cleaning. As we all know, the claw must be retracted before the gate assembly is taken out. To ensure this done correctly the inching knob is turned until its dot is vertical at 12 o'clock.

I did this and as I did so I noticed another dot on the projector's body, this was left horizontal at 9 o'clock. A quick check in the manual revealed:

"Move the lens forward, and then turn the manual operating knob until the two white dots are opposite each other; the film feeding claws are thus retracted and protected against the risk of damage".

I mention this for any owner without an instruction book and is familiar with Eumigs with their red dot.

You are absolutely correct Maurice. I have one these and a photocopy of the owners manual giving the same instructions for removing the gate. The projector came from Warton Parfitt someyears ago at a Group 9.5 Spring Fair. I then started to collect a few second hand films, shorts and condensed versions, to run on it. It still works well. I try to give all my projectors a regular run as it helps to prevent the capacitors from failing. Something I have learned to my cost in the past. Ken Finch.

Very strange that the dot is in a vertical position on the Eumigs and at 9 o'clock on the Bolex. This just invites claw breakage from people who have both machines. [Frown]

Was this yet another silly cosmetic feature change to give the Bolex a difference to the Eumig?
