without knowing much about these is it magnetic sound? if so check the heads if your hearing sound but not very loud the heads could be dirty gently clean with a swab and some isopropyl alcohol. Does the film seem to run fine through the machine otherwise? if its optical sound your sound head may need adjustment or simply try another film you know has good sound. Also if the unit has an external jack for a speaker try that instead of the built in speaker.

Welcome Gerald...check out this thread. I had a similar problem with my Elmo ST800 and this fixed it.

Hell Jim
that was quick, anyway I've tried the alcohal treatment, no go if you touch around the connections to the playback head you get a loud buzz, I have tried headphone from the external speaker jack and still no loud sound, very difficult to see if the heads could be out of adjustment and I don't have an owner's manual, the sound strip on 8mm are very small and don't know if there is adjustments for that

Gerald...Did you insert and remove the headphone jack repeatedly like Steve Klare suggested in the link I provided?

Janice
yes I tried all your suggestions, I suspect the trouble could be on the amplifier board which is almost impossible to get at, the sound is barely audible, tried a small ajustment to the playback head, I would need a diagram of the electronics which seems almost to impossible to find
Gerald
