Hello. I have a question for you Beaulieu owners out there. I noticed that when I am rewinding a film sometimes I hear a clicking sound so I opened up the back and found it was coming from the gear that does the main rewinding. In the pic its the large one with the steeple tower coming out of it. [Smile]
If there is no tension..no noise. But if I hold the hub on the front arm I can recreate the clicking noise and the white gear will stop moving while the motor is still going. Thus the clicking noise. It sounds like the gear is slipping and needs to be tightened. Does anyone have a manual for this and can see if thats where the problem is? It seems a simple fix but I don't want to take the gears apart if I don't have to.

Sounds like the clutch is slipping on that gear with the spring on top in your picture alan, there are friction drive plates in there, the spring allows your to tension the drive under that. Andrew will no doubt have a in depth knowledge of this machine, and will explain more to you.

Great! Strange thing though is that when I hold the hub from spinning the top gear continues to move..it won't stop. Its the white gear in the middle that actually stops.

Its just the clutch mechanism Rik. I have all the drawings etc for this entire sub assembly and will find a way to post them on to you with a detailed explanation of all parts involved on the drive chain just as soon as the dreaded Virgin Media pull their finger out!!

Internet connection in the Woody household will be resumed on Tuesday afternoon GMT Rik. I will write back to you then pal [Smile]

In the meantime Rik, go on the Wittners Beaulieu.de page and then go to Wiedergabe which lists all of the spare Beaulieu projector parts. Scroll down the list of parts to the bottom of the page where you will see a black nylon spur gear. This is a wear part on that part of the 708. When you view this part by clicking on it, there is a link to a drawing from the original service manual by pressing the link called plan 2. Look at parts 14 to 19 and chances are this is where you're problem lies.

Ok Rik, found a solution to the Virgin (not so) superhub problem at my end so fire away if the advice given so far did not provide you with a starting point or better still a solution hopefully.

Thanks Andrew.
I'll take a look under the "hood".
Are the gears each held in place with a hex screw? That's a lot of gears!

I will study the drawings on that Rik and get back to you as although I understand the mechanism from reading the service manual and studying the drawings, I have so far never had a reason to break down this section on my machine as the rewind facility is strong and trouble free so far on mine.

I have, as said previously, invested in the nylon black gear from Wittners Part number 17 on Plan 2 drawing, just to have as a spare for the future in case a problem arises.

I will get back to you on this but I know you will definitely need a pair of small external circlip pliers, snipe nosed pliers and at least a set of metric allen keys to dismantle and re-assemble this section of the machine successfully. Be extremely careful when removing refitting the drive pin & clip etc, it will be very fiddly!

Just had another look at the drawing Rik and only 5 gears to deal with in dismantling this assembly, none have grub screws but the initial locking collar item 9 is locked at tension from the spring by a grub screw item 10. The gears are driven by the spring tension and friction plates but have to be allowed to slip in the event of too much force being applied to the drive hence the reason this is a clutch mechanism. The standard spring tension is over ridden by pulling the front knob to place the machine in fast high torque rewind mode for spools over 1200ft.

The gears can still then slip but only at a much higher torque applied to the drive.

Parts 14 to 19 should be closely looked at to discover the problem, there will be a fault somewhere in there from what you are describing.
