Hi Jim,
I have a copy of Popeye meets Sinbad the Sailor by Demaio.
I am not an expert by any means, nor can i compare with other manufacturers(since i don't have many to compare to), but what I can say is that my copy is very very good. Colours are nice. Some of the blues seem to fade here and there but i am not sure if that is the film degrading or the original print painting job. I need to watch a good digital copy to compare.
My copy is dated 1978, so it is 37 years old, when Demaio(iowa) officially registered a business.

If this helps, i will say this...I had seen the current popeye listing on ebay and thought to get that because i liked my copy so much...but with shipping and us exchange i opted out...but being closer to the action, you may want to look into it further!
Cheers,
Matt

I'm not sure, but I think that there is a Demaio print of 'Popeye Meets Ali Baba" on ebay right now.

Here is that listing ...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SUPER-8MM-MOVIE-POPEYE-MEETS-ALI-BABA-DEMAIO-FILM-SERVICE-COLOR-SOUND-/311455281524?hash=item48842e7174

Please note: The seller does not list color, (" I have no way to view this "), so my listing this auction is not an endorsement of good color. I can say that as a general rule,
the "De" prints have retained their color pretty good and always have an image better than the Niles prints.

Not bad for a "buy it now", it has two days left. If you happen to go for it, report back and let us know if you have lucked into a "keeper".

I lucked into a very nice print of this title that someone, before printing it, had printed it with a Cyan filter, so the color is much better than usual. I can't say, however, if my print is a "De", I'll look today and see if it is because, if it is, I know my print is an LPP print, and that might be good news for you!

I bought the Demaio copy of Popeye and it has a brownish hue to it I have my copy the first and the demaio copy is second same scene shown from the same projector. Guess my copy isn't so bad after all.

That's a bummer Jim!
I guess we can say for sure now that demaio films do fade!
My popeye copy looks more like the top one, but i don't know why it could or would be nice still, unless he used different film stocks?
Cheers,
Matt

Jim ...

I'll dig out my print of this cartoon and see who the film distribution company was, as my print is low fade, and the people who did the print used Cyan filters to restore some of the color from the existing negative they used and actually had some fairly decent results.

"Popeye Meets Ali Baba" is one the of the 400ft Max Fleischer cartoons, (like "Popeye in Alladdin"), in which nearly all negative materials really suffer in color quality, even when brand new, ("Alladdin" being the worst).

Our own Douglas Meltzer really lucked into a very nice copy of "Popeye/Ali Baba", and I think it was an "Atlas" print, of all things.

Doug, could you verify that?

In fact, I would LOVE to see some screenshots from it to compare to my at least decent print. [Smile]
