So I picked up an Elmo GS800 in like new condition. I had 2 of them in the past and thought they were so so. This particular model I have has the ability to play optical and magnetic.
Very quiet running, no fuss projector. So I laced it up and tested the sound and the picture. With the 1.3 lens it was good. Then I swapped it out with the 1.0 and wow. I was blown away. Literally. Picture quality was up there with the GS1200 to my eyes. And with a 100 watt bulb no less! I projected an 8 foot image and never felt the picture was dim or not bright enough.
And the sound? The Optical on this machine sounds better than the optical on my GS1200 Xenon! And even the magnetic sound seems a ad bit better. Stereo sound? Really really good.
So since I have this new toy I just kept pulling out reel after reel to see what things would look like. I have to say that sitting there watching films on this machine was a joy. Because of the 1.0 lens it had a better image than my Bauer T610. Stereo and mono sound were on par with my GS1200. Maybe just a tad bit better?
When I had my GS800 many years ago maybe it had been used to death. Maybe it was the 1.3 lens. But this one purrs along and had such a great image and sound. Oh.. and its quiet too. Not as quiet as the Bauer but the image...I can live with a little bit more noise as a trade off for the great picture and sound.
Kev used to have one with a 2 bladed shutter. I bet that one was a killer.
Great little machine.

No doubt about it, the superb Elmo f1.0 is a game changer from the mediocre f1.3.
Its all in the glass.
