Since I was scanning away today, I figured it's time to have another cover art quiz!

These are details of the artwork from 4 different cutdowns. See if you can identify which releases these are from. Best of luck!

A.
 -

B.
 -

C.
 -

D.

(A) is from HIGH NOON

Doug I LOVE when you do these box art quizzes! But I think you have me stumped this time.

I'll take a wild guess and say "Ben Hur" for the last one.

James.

The man from Galveston is correct. A is a detail from the cover of the Republic Pictures 200' silent cutdown of High Noon.

 -

Good guess James, however D is not from Ben Hur.

Well, I instantly recognize B,,, my very first 8mm film! I Was A Teenage Frankenstein...
I only had enough money saved for one film, and I had to choose between this and The Creature Walks Among Us, I chose this one because I thought the larger Ken Films box had a longer reel of film. Wrong!, they were both 50 footers...

B is indeed Joe's first film....Ken Films' I Was a Teenage Frankenstein. The cover art here has no relation to the film inside.

2 down, 2 to go!

Going to make a wild guess with 'D"... "The Ten Commandments"

Graham,

That makes perfect sense, but it's not that film.

How about Ben-Hur for "D"?

Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on July 30, 2016, 07:59 PM:

Trisha agrees with James and me on Ben-Hur.

(She also got "High Noon" without seeing Guy's post...how'd she DO that?!)

Steve,

What I wrote before still stands: It's not Ben Hur!

If no one solves C & D by Monday I'll start giving hints.

All about for "D"..."Fall of the Roman Empire" [Roll Eyes]

Posted by Douglas Meltzer (Member # 28) on July 31, 2016, 11:23 AM:

Sorry Graham.

Neither of the two remaining covers are from films that would be considered epics (biblical or otherwise).

Doug,
Congratulations...This has to be the most challenging set yet!
(D) is Columbia's "Buck and the Preacher."

Posted by Douglas Meltzer (Member # 28) on July 31, 2016, 09:42 PM:

Carter is absolutely right!

D is Columbia Pictures' 400' digest of Buck and the Preacher.

One left!

A hint for C:

This is from a Columbia digest.

Hey Doug,
You are sneaky...because all of my Columbia War films came in the generic 50th anniversary digest print boxes. IF I had the later reprint boxes, I would guess that C is "Back from Eternity," "Bridge on the River Kwai," "Commandos Strike at Dawn," "The Guns of Navarone," or "Lost Command." (But the bylaws probably don't allow me this many guesses. LOL)

I think you nailed it with Lost Command

Posted by Douglas Meltzer (Member # 28) on August 02, 2016, 02:17 PM:

Lost Command it is!

Sneaky? Absolutely! Nice bit of teaming up there, Evan & Carter.

Excellent work everyone!

Now how about making the next quiz REALLY hard - Shorty

Posted by Guy Taylor, Jr. (Member # 786) on August 03, 2016, 02:15 PM:

I've never heard of either of these Columbia digests but I am willing to bet that there is a really annoying narrator overstating the obvious.

c was a neat cover and a tough one. I was surprised how many covers had someone with the same 'stance' as the pic you posted Doug...

for example, the claw monsters

...this is what makes it challenging! The Claw Monsters

Posted by Carter Bradley (Member # 984) on August 03, 2016, 03:24 PM:

It's been a while since I have watched these two Columbia digests, but I wouldn't be surprised if the narrator states "Then Buck meets the Preacher," and "The Command was shocked to realize that they were lost!!"

Posted by Guy Taylor, Jr. (Member # 786) on August 03, 2016, 08:54 PM:

This would be a great new thread to start "Really stupid quotes from the Columbia narrator."

Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on August 04, 2016, 08:55 AM:

I am a Columbia Narrator Noob!

Since I've heard so much about him I actually requested somebody bring some examples of his best (or is that worst?) to CineSea, and Paul Suchy was nice enough to mail me one for the Saturday Night Show.

I'm still a Noob, and it must have been an internal groan for some of the people that have had enough of this guy!

I probably shouldn't do cover quizzes either: most of my prints don't have cover art!

 -

-but, we all specialize some way or another. That's why it's good to hang out among other collectors and see things from different angles.

We'll design our own box - I'm going to bring the SOUND edition of High Noon - Oh yes, it's a rare KEN 200-ft'er - To Noob or NOT to Noob, what was the question? - Shorty
