Hello
I recently purchased a Bolex Paillard 18-5 in what appears to be in fantastic condition.
When in the forward play mode, the feed reels spins sending the film unspooling to the floor.
Any suggestions?

From that it looks like the clutch in the front arm that gives the rewind, but should disengage when forward projecting has seized so that it is driving all the time.

Not knowing the 18-5 I don't know if this is in the body of the projector or the arm, but some-one here will. Despite saying that I would suspect that it is behind the drive sprocket at the front.

I have not had the front reel arm apart but I have attached a pic of the rear reel arm and and exploded view of both. I check one of my machines and the gears and shaft on the front spin in forward and reverse. The their must be a clutch mechanism in the front arm that disengages. Look closely at the the exploded view. Their are just two screws holding the arm together but open it carefully so gears etc don't spill out. Based on the diagram, it does appear the the inside of the reel arms are set up the same. I don't know where the disengagement occurs.

It's possible that the gears and clutch on the front arm are sticking and need to be cleaned and re-lubricated.

OK, I see where the issue is. Look at the attached exploded view. Note part number BPE5095 and BP5097. You see the little pin coming out the side of BP5097? That pin is to be engaged with the teeth on part BPE5095. They will engage in only one direction, Which would be when you rewind or run in reverse. In forward, they just slip over the pin and the spindle will not turn. That black triangle indicates that part is to be greased. As Janice said, it is likely in need of regreasing.

Thank you all for the input. Especially Barry who's photos and diagram helped immensely. I open up the feed arm and disengaged it. The machine no longer rewinds, but I use rewinds or an old junk projector to rewind my films anyway.

Well, at least you can use the projector now. Many film buffs use rewinds rather than doing it on the projector.
