A question for the lads in the U.K. ...

I might be wrong, but isn't it true, that the 200ft STAR WARS color sound, was actually available in the U.K., before it was in the theaters? I'm not sure, but I think I heard that somewhere.

Hi Osi

My science teacher showed us the 200ft Star Wars extract before it arrived in the cinema in UK.

Yes , he ran an after school club which hired 16mm films horror and science fiction classics. We had to produce the odd critic essay to justify to headmaster lol I got my introduction to super 8 and 16mm projectors from him as well.

Well, I was only 6 years old when Star Wars hit the UK cinemas, and much like Osi and a whole generation, I think that this singular film (without being too melodramatic, and to George's credit) may influenced our outlook upon life.

I certainly remember that I was so desperate (insert "spoit") to get hold of anything "Star Wars" that I could enjoy at home, and that included the ultimate...200ft B&W Silent "Star Wars" as advertised in the national press by Portland Films.

I never did get it BTW!!!

But, as has been stated, the 200ft Ken was available with B&W silent / Colour (or Color) and Sound, before the UK theatrical release, but I wonder if this was such a great introduction to the film...

Remember the thrill of seeing that widescreen fox logo, with extended fanfare, Lucasfilm, "A long..." and then STAR WARS with John Williams blasting score...

Like "pirate" VHS videos of the 1980's (soo cool...I remember seeing ET and thinking it was amazing until I saw it in a real cineama) I'm not sure in retrospect just how valid this kind of thing was.

"Alien" 400ft Ken was released before the theatrical release...

Imagine now, "Come 'round my house and see 17 minutes of the latest Ridley Scott / Fox Blockbuster...in pan & scan, mono"???

Strange, whistful times...

I know we all loved these things at the time, but as I get older and begin to appreciate the craft of the people involved in making these films, I feel we really should only see them in the best presentable form possible.

Still keeping my super 8 copies though. lol!!!
