CineSea 14 is less than a month away, so it's time for attendees to nominate a print from their collection for a screening on Friday evening, October 21st at the Ocean Holiday Resort in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey. Admission is free.

So open that closet o' film, take a good look and please list the title (up to two per collector) and format here by 10/6. We'll then have an online survey and attendees can pick which title they prefer by 10/14.

Previous screenings have included Super 8 prints of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and a gorgeous 16mm scope print of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

My two offerings are both from Derann. The full length Scars of Dracula 1970 (Super 8mm, color) and Master & Commander 2003(Super 8mm color/scope)

Join the fray!

Doug

Fantasia 2000

-an excellent Derann Super-8 print which once resided in the Meltzer Closet o' Film!

(It's OK...he knows I have it!)

Master and Commander in Scope. Really would love to see that on the big screen.

I'm about to purchase a very rare print of The Black Pirate with Douglas Fairbanks. What makes it rare is it is a color print of the two-strip Technicolor. You can't find that on 16mm film. It is from an original 35mm print. On low fade. I'd love to share it with you guys if you are at all interested. I am sending the check tomorrow to a collector friend, and will have it in my hands very soon.

Wow. That sounds great Jack. I would really enjoy that too.

Here's the information I received from the person I am buying THE BLACK PIRATE from. The print derives from high quality material in the Raymond Rohauer collection. Though not sure if the negative was a Rohauer negative that was accessed or acquired or if the negative was made from a 35mm print, the quality is excellent. The two strip technicolor (which is a different look from later 3 strip Technicolor) is a great example of color in the silent film and is very appealing. It's a great performance by Fairbanks and the entire cast too. Prints were struck late enough that they were all on low fade stock. I'm not sure if the print has any stock markings imprinted along the edge codes, but the color is low fade.
We can look at it together and use our expertise to maybe come up with some answers. This is all the information I currently have, but I will be able to attest to its quality once I have received it and it has been viewed. It sounds like quite a rarity, and thought folks might be interested.

Sounds very interesting Jack. I am going to nominate two 16mm prints from my collection. The first one is an LPP print of the sci-fi classic, "Aliens" (1986) and the second is an LPP print of "Golden Voyage of Sinbad" (1973).

Good choices all around!

Lou, is Aliens in scope? =D

Posted by Louis Franchetti (Member # 2035) on September 25, 2016, 01:19 PM:

Aliens wasn't shot in scope believe it or not. I thought the same thing when I bought the print, which is probably why the gentleman I bought it from sold it to me at such a reasonable price.

Jack, I think you might have a Griggs or Glenn Photo print-down, if the original titles and inter-titles are intact - I'd have to see it to be sure - Shorty

I am offering a very soft focus, barely watchable Super 8 print of THE PRIVATE LIFE OF KING HENRY THE VIII just to have something to vote against. If it wins I will be on the boardwalk during the Friday feature screening.

-be careful what you wish for:

I nominated one of my stinkers once as a goof and Doug called my bluff!

(Had to campaign against my own film!)

"Better prints have been lifted at crime scenes!"

What's funny is I've always wanted to see "The Private Life of King Henry the VIII". It is one of the films featured in Blackhawk's sound sampler "Movies that Talk and Sing" and I'm curious what the rest of it is like.

Posted by Guy Taylor, Jr. (Member # 786) on September 26, 2016, 10:25 AM:

It's a good movie but the print quality is not up to Blackhawk's usual standard.
Some of their later prints might be better. I still don't want to part with my copy.

NILES had it - Same difference - This is a London Film, distinguished by costumes, and the actual Balmoral Castle during Henry's reign - Very nicely-done history, has to jump around a bit in order to be more concise with facts - It would be a pleasure to see this and later such films, but many don't have the witherall or patience - Long Live The King - Shorty

In order to continue the Star Wars Triolagy, I am offering to show my Near Mint LPP Scope original Fox Mylar print of The Empire Strikes Back, with dazzling picture, color and sound! Come on, we need to finish the series lol. Second film I am offering is a vintage old 1934 Kodak original print of The Invisible Man with Claude Rains for Halloween! Looking forward to seeing you all, along with selected shorts, trailers and more of the Crimson Ghost!! [Smile]

Hey Shorty-

I believe the print I am getting of "The Black Pirate" was privately done. It is a very limited print run from my understanding.

According to plan next year in October your going to show The Force Awakens [Cool]

Would love to go but Kids,School,Wife etc..

Now, when you say "privately done", there must be a personalized lab/equipment - This individual must have acquired a neg - Well, details please -

I could bring my 70mm horizontal print of INTERSTELLAR (2014) or would that just be showing off?

Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on October 03, 2016, 11:50 AM:

Showing off would be getting the projector up from Galveston in the back of a Mustang!

have we started voting yet?

Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on October 03, 2016, 12:09 PM:

I think we are still in the primaries!

I think there should be some behind the scenes negotiations going on. We're a friendly group, so I wouldn't expect any blatant arm twisting, but a little benign bribery would be OK.

It pays to remember that I am the head of a household (1) representing three votes. I am fond of railroad films and refrigerated Kodak 100D cartridges!

Don't try to negotiate with my wife...she wants a new car!

(-Just saying! [Wink] )

Notes:

(1) Not that this status has ever meant that much!

We have till October 6th for submissions. Then attendees will receive an email about online voting. If anyone out there is planning on attending for the first time, send me an email and you'll be included in the vote!

Just to bring us up to date:

Shorty: The Thing (1951)
Steve: Fantasia 2000
Jack: The Black Pirate
Lou: Aliens or Golden Voyage of Sinbad
Guy: The Private Life of Henry VIII
Gary: The Empire Strikes Back or The Invisible Man
Me: Scars of Dracula or Master and Commander

Three days left....any others?

You are right Steve. I can't fit the IMAX Projector and the Lone Star beer in the trunk of the Mustang. The IMAX will have to stay.

So many great choices, too bad Friday night isn't a double feature night!

Posted by Nicole Tucky (Member # 5587) on October 03, 2016, 07:17 PM:

I agree, Michael! I hope we get to see "Aliens." I haven't seen that one in years...

I love Aliens too! Although, I feel like I'm a cast member this week, been sick like a dog all week after taking the kids to chuck e cheese last weekend.

NEVER TOUCH ANYTHING AT CHUCK E CHEESE!!!! I tell myself that every time, but never take my own advice.... [Razz]

I'm going to live in a bubble the week before CineSea!

We have 15 days to go!!!! Yee-haw! [Big Grin]

Also, Geoffrey asked me to post that he would like to add his prints of Young Frankenstein and Mission Impossible (1996) to the list.

Posted by Jason Smith (Member # 5055) on October 05, 2016, 09:42 PM:

I would like to add Jason and the Argonauts to the list. It`s the full length Derann print.

I would love to see Interstellar in 70mm. When I saw The Force Awakkens in 70mm in Fort Worth, TX, they told me they told me the film on the platter weighed a couple hundred pounds.

Posted by Daniel Macarone (Member # 5102) on October 05, 2016, 10:11 PM:

I saw Interstellar in 70mm twice at the Ziegfield Theater, NY. After that experience, watching it on DVD doesn't compare.
I can't make it to CineSea, otherwise I would have offered one of my own Super 8 features. Have fun.

Posted by Joe Caruso (Member # 11) on October 06, 2016, 06:53 AM:

ARGONAUTS is always a pleasure

This is the largest number of films we've ever had to choose from! The email with the survey link has been sent out. If you haven't received yours, let me know.

Please respond by October 14th. There's always the chance we'll need a runoff!

Doug

The shame of it is there are so many really great films here that won't win!

If you have a film in the mix and it comes close to the top, please consider offering it again some other time.

Posted by Evan Samaras (Member # 5070) on October 07, 2016, 02:44 PM:

Anyone else having a hard time voting?

I've narrowed my choices down to 4 haha

Posted by Nicole Tucky (Member # 5587) on October 07, 2016, 03:00 PM:

I have to go with "Aliens," since I feel as an adventure film, it really needs to be seen on the big screen.

Not only that, but I haven't seen it in forever and I think we should see a film where we all can have a fun time reacting to it like we do with the Crimson Ghost series!

Posted by Joe Caruso (Member # 11) on October 08, 2016, 12:32 PM:

Yeah, I'll get a good beating from you

Shorty,

As it says in the first post, the voting continues till 10/14.

Darn, I had Peter Noone scheduled to make a special celebrity guest appearance if we screened THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY THE VIII. Maybe next year.

Guy,

Now if you can find a print of his feature Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter...

Alan,

Thank you so much for the offer, however the voting had started on 10/6. That would be a great film to show, and you should bring it personally!

Yes, there are a number of them that should be on the ballot again.

-Seems like two days ago we were celebrating getting to CineSea 10, yet CineSea 15 is now on the horizon! Maybe that Friday Night Feature already has some candidates.
