A new Super 8 camera from Kodak, the return of Ektachrome film stock. So, is there a future for Super 8? Hope so. I am the former editor-in-chief of the small format magazine. Even in these days I get a lot of mails asking for the return of the mag. But printing and shipping is too expensive. So we thought for something different, something contemporary: The Super 8 Web Portal.

The Super 8 Web Portal is intended to bring together current filmmakers and newcomers, to present both old and new film projects and to offer a massive online archive of more than 1,000 curated small format films. Active filmmakers and gear collectors alike will find the information they need, with the world's largest online archive of 3,900 cameras and 3,500 projectors. We just started a crowdfunding campaign to realize this idea: Crowdfunding: The Super 8 Web Portal

Super 8 has been quiet for 30 years, but a small worldwide following of around 2,500 filmmakers is keeping the medium alive. Following traditional film photography, instant photos and vinyl records, this medium is now poised to take a ride on the retro express. Kodak has introduced a new Super 8 camera and reintroduced Ektachrome color reversal film. Ferrania (Italy) and Adox (Germany) are creating new film stocks for Super 8. Other companies are also researching and developing Super 8 cameras and film. The time has come to provide an information resource to support these developments. A portal featuring modern responsive design, which functions on home computers as well as smartphones.

What do you think about this project? Is there still a community of Super 8 freaks?

Juergen,

What a terrific project! I've just made my pledge.
Small Format was a wonderful magazine and everyone who loves 8mm should support The Super 8 Web Portal.

I am sure this will be a huge success Juergen once the film stock finally makes it to market once again. Then Super 8mm film makers the world over, can again film whenever the mood takes their fancy.

Thanks, the first 46 backers are already there. But we need some more support so that this project will become reality. By the way: these four books are gifts for backers of The Super 8 Web Portal. Have a look: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1112932678/the-super-8-web-portal

Hi Winbert, yes, we will put online a lot of articles from small format magazine when the project is online. But at first we have to reach our goal and get enough funding to start The Super 8 Web Portal. So have a look if there is a offer that would be suitable for you: The Super 8 Web Portal

Hi Dominique,
we have 82 backers and Euro 5809 so far. Here you can see the design of our SUPER 8 WEB PORTAL.

Here are some more facts about the project: Are you ready for the good news? And there is good news! The resurrected Kodak will presently feature a new Super 8 camera and the Ektachrome colour reversal film will be reintroduced. What’s more, there are other companies working on cameras (for example in Switzerland and Denmark), Adox and Ferrania are creating new film stocks for Super 8. But the best is yet to come: I understand that a cartridge will be offered, inclusive of processing, at around US-$ 50/Euro 50.

Super 8 – isn’t it special, isn’t it still fun? This dancing screenful of grain? I think now it is the right time for a new Super 8 Web Portal focussed topics relating to our shared interests. The portal is intended to bring together current filmmakers and newcomers, to present both old and new film projects and to offer a massive online archive of more than 1,000 archived and available small format films. Active filmmakers and gear collectors alike will find the information they need, with the world’s largest online archive of 4,000 cameras and 4,000 projectors.

Today, I would like to ask for your support. We are starting a CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN for a totally new The Super 8 Web Portal, because we need your help to create the platform and the design. All the films have to be scanned and the research for the articles is also expensive. The first 65 backers are already there! Have a look here for our Kickstarter project:

https://www.kickstarter.com/…/111293…/the-super-8-web-portal

And please spread the word, share our idea for a new worldwide Super 8 community. If we don't find more people that are willing to shoot Super 8 cartridges the format will be gone within a decade. We must do everything to keep Super 8 staying alive.

I was hoping there would be a little bit more of a discussion about the usefulness of our SUPER 8 WEB PORTAL. What do you think about the idea and the different categories of the portal?

50% funded now, 98 backers. There is some hope that we will make it:).

The kickstarter page doesn't allow to use the links given for the books offered as a reward : when you click on the concerned area, you can only choose the reward, not access to the link.

Yes, we know. It's a problem of Kickstarter, we cannot solve this. But you can copy the link. All the books are shown on www.atollmedien.de - english page.

Yesterday was a very good day for our project, more than Euro/US $ 4,000 in one day! 105 backers, 56% funded so far. Sounds good! [Wink]

Boarding is completed - the English version has been funded. Kodak is a big backer of The Super 8 Web Portal! Thanks everybody - and thanks to the other supporting companies like ADOX, Super8Reversal Lab, van Eck, pro8mm, screenshot, Kühn Videotechnik and many others for the help! Now we will try to get the German version funded. We have another 8 days to get 9000 Euro for this website. Everybody can still be part of the project and get a subscription of the English website: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1112932678/the-super-8-web-portal

The English version has been funded, but everybody can still get a subscription for the website. For the German page we still need 4,998 Euro. Will we do it? Crowdfunding Kickstarter

Funded! A big thank you to all 178 backers who supported our project with a total of Euro 26,972 - there were also a lot of companies that took advertisement packages. A minimum of four backers came directly from this forum, thanks a lot [Wink] .

We will start with THE SUPER 8 WEB PORTAL end of August! Let's hope that Super 8 will have a bright future. And of course we will publish articles about the other small formats for filmmakers too [Wink] .

Hello: I was among the backers. A few days ago I received an email stating that I'd have to register and then my basic subscriber's status would have been upgraded to a higher one so that I could have access to the more interesting articles. I did what I was requested last Sunday but I still do not have the chance to access such articles. What's up, Juergen, please?
