Hey, all you overseas collectors ...

I'm wanting to find out two things ...

1. Did UK and otherwise overseas companies release prints of "Sons of the Desert"?

2. What is the image quality of those prints?

The reason why I ask is that I'm kinda fed up with my Blackhawk print of this title, which has always had a fuzzy image to it, but i have heard that it was released overseas and from other negative sources, which gives me the hope that our overseas friends may have lucked out on sharper prints.

I also understand that, thought they were released, they might have been edited slightly as well, which i don't have a problem with as, I can always insert the necessary Blackhawk footage into the other print, though image quality will suffer in those circumstances.

Screenshot comparisons might help as well.

So, I ask all of you fine folks, the above question ... [Smile]

Hi Osi

I've had Sons of the Desert as a Blackhawk print and the slightly abridged Walton version released under UK title Fraternally Yours. I know what you mean about the grainy Blackhawk print it is complete but it not great.

The Walton print was re released by Derann on polyester and it is a great print but there is a slight blue tint to it as it was released on colour stock and the feature like all Walton releases is slightly abridged. The references to Stan smoking are cut and the scenes in the attic are reduced I also think some of Charlie Chases scenes are also removed. You don't actually notice it as the feature still flows well and unless you are really familiar with the feature or run them side by side you don't notice. You won't be able to slot scenes in as they will really jar print wise. Mark Todd the polyester King would be able to supply you with info as he sources those type of prints on a regular basis.

Thanks Mike, that helps, but how is the sharpnes of the Walton print in comparison to the Blackhawk?

I ended up keeping an older print of "Sons", between two Blackhawk editions as, both prints were taken from, the very same negative, (negative scratching at the same places was a dead give-away), but the older one was printed slightly darker and so there is a little more deatil than on the newer of the two prints, which was a little brighter, but facial qualities, details on clothes and such, were better on the earlier Blackhawk.

This brings up another question ...

Did Blackhaek also release this on Standard 8mm? If so, perhaps thier standard 8mm copies fared a little better than the super 8 copies?

Osi,

You might want to hold out for a better Blackhawk print. My copy, purchased in 1974, is very satisfactory. This was before they released the improved version from the better negative. So there should be some nice Blackhawks out there.

There should also be Standard 8mm prints out there as well.
