Hello,

My great-grandfather passed away and I was given his stash of 8mm regular and super format films that he recorded during his lifetime. I would like to watch them and enjoy them however I have purchased 3 separate projectors and all of them either smell AWFUL when running or do not work.

My question is what is a solid, quality projector that I can purchase?

Thank you.

I think the smelly one(s) may be promising.

Stationary objects gather dust. (Stationary people might in extreme cases...) The problem with projectors is when they run they get extremely hot in certain places and the dust burns (and stinks). I've even seen a thin trail of smoke rising out the top. (Lionel would have been proud of it!).

If you do a really thorough internal cleaning, especially around the lamp, maybe it'll get better. You shouldn't touch the lamp itself, since skin oils can cause the lamp to shatter. Cleaning with a tissue and rubbing alcohol is a good final step. (Bonus points for wearing cloth gloves.)

We have a gas fireplace that makes the exact same stink the first time we use it each Fall. That burns off in a couple of minutes, but it catches us by surprise every year!

It seems that you need a projector that can run regular 8 and Super 8 films. I assume they are silent.
Look out for a Sankyo dualux 2000H. Mine doesn't smell [Smile]

An old friend of mine polished his guides with Lemon Pledge.

-I bet his machines smelled kinda nice!

A touch of barbecue sauce would smell great, but you might wind up having to give up film and go on a diet!

I'm prestty sure that my first GS200 came from a Porn film emporium, reeked of tobacco smoke, and was really filthy inside. [Roll Eyes] Took quite a while to clean it up to as new condition.
Lemon Pledge works great for cleaning gates and film guides, and also the exterior of the projector.
And it makes your projector smell repectable [Big Grin]

I agree with Maurice that the Sankyo dualux 2000 is a good choice. It plays both super 8 and standard 8mm film and has an inexpensive bulb compared to the Sankyo dualux 1000 that I have. Make sure you try to find the 2000 model. [Smile]

I second the Sankyo 2000H.

The Eumig 610 is also an excellent dual guage projector. Multi speed, reverse play, still frame and excellent zoom lens. Takes a 12v 100w lamp and gives a great bright picture. Probably a cheaper option than a Sankyo 2000.

They're rare but the Sankyo Dualux 1000 was available with a 12v halogen bulb like the 2000 The letter H was added after the 1000 to identify them. I've never had a projector which smelled of anything.

The Sankyo 2000's price is the equivalent of about £92 in the UK. It does have the original box and the original accessories which makes it rare though so fair enough. There's very little information given on the Eumig and only one photograph. The seller might say that it's in excellent condition but does it work? The first projector I bought on eBay was said to be working. Funny that without a drive belt!
