Hello all, I have a Sankyo 1000 which was working great but now have no "bulb projection". I swapped with known good bulbs but still no joy. Bulbs are same from my Chinon 3000 & 4000 and they work in those machines (but each of those machines have their own problems)and bulbs illuminate. Connections look clean and tight where bulb contacts. Any ideas what this could be and advice on whether I should repair or hunt for new (same or different model?) machine? I average 10-20 reels per month.

Hi Darryn,

Welcome to the 8mm Forum!

If you can find where the socket wires connect to power, expose those points and then measure the voltage, you can learn a lot.

This machine uses a 12V lamp, so even if you don't have a voltmeter you can use an automotive test light that you should be able to get at an auto parts store pretty cheaply. If you grab something like a taillight bulb and solder some wires onto it, you don't even need that.

If it's just the socket, that's an easy fix. If it's the lamp power supply, now it gets more complicated.

Thanks Steve, I have both in garage and will report after checking.

Steve...The Sankyo dualux 1000 uses a 8v 50W bulb. It's the 2000H that uses the 12v.

So the Internet LIED to me, eh?!!!

If you can't trust a faceless, anonymous source, who can you trust anymore!

(Thanks, Janice!)

I'd think an 8 volt source should still light up a 12V bulb, but I'd rather go with a meter anyway!

There was a version which was fitted with a 12v halogen bulb but they're hard to find.

Yes...the 1000H is 12V. That may have been the projector specs you saw Steve.

I think so.

This is like my son's Yelco machine: one version with the spaceman bulb and the other with EFP. I really wish we'd gotten the 100W version, but then again it was free, so I shouldn't complain too much.

As the problems we deal with go, this one shouldn't be that bad. As I said: hopefully just something like the socket. Even if it isn't it will probably be something like a connection or a switch.

Most Sankyo models use micro switches which are operated by the main function switch. I have found that they eventually fail and need to be replaced.

I have replaced micro switches on the Sankyo 600 that have failed, however I don't think all models of Sankyo use micro switches. The 1000 and 2000H are examples. From what I can see... the main switch wiring, lamp, and the power board are connected directly to the transformer. I don't see any micro switches

This is weird, test light lights but not bulb. 3 bulbs (including the one from the Sankyo) light up in my Chinon when i set to lamp. None of these bulbs light when I set the Sankyo to lamp. I will not have a meter till next week, but the testlight is pretty strong. Should the Sankyo light instantly when set to lamp? For some reason I think mine would not light until film started going through gate.

Hi Darryn....The lamp will not light until you have film going through the projector. I've never like this...but that's the way they were designed. So most likely there's nothing wrong with the bulb or the projector [Smile]

Thanks Janice, now we may be on to something. I had put film through each time I tried and still nothing. Now I wonder what gizmo turns the lamp on once film goes through. This all started yesterday as I began transferring 9 reels. First one was fine, but number 2 had no lamp. Naturally I assumed bad bulb, but now I wonder if whatever mechanism lights the lamp ONLY if there is film in it, may be the issue.

I don't have a machine to test, but the loop former that you push down before threading the film should release when the film is in the take-up reel and you turn the switch to lamp. This activates the light to go on.

I just checked one of mine. You won't see anything projected without a film running through but the light should come on when you switch to "Lamp". I'd try cleaning the central contact with emery paper to start with. The contact is springy so you could try gently bending it upwards in case it's not making proper contact. The 8v 50w bulb will draw a lot more current than a test light so the contact has to be clean. Switch cleaner can work wonders I've found.
