Hello all,

First time poster here.

I recently discovered about a dozen old family super 8 films from late 60's to the early 80's. I also found about 5 undeveloped films and sent one out to Martin Baumgarten to see if they can be developed.

After spending a couple hundred dollars getting a few digitized, I decided to do it myself and bought a Eumig Mark S 802 on Craigslist.

At first, once I got the hang of it, it worked really well. The picture is sharp and rich in color, and the sound synced well. The only problem was that the sound would cut out intermittently.

I looked up on this forum and the consensus seemed to be to spray some compressed air to clear out any particles, which I did by taking off the back and spraying out everything including the audio head shaft. However, in the process, I turned the can sideways and some liquid air came out onto the circuit board under the transformer, and quickly evaporated.

When I then went to play a film back, the sound didn't do any better (though I then figured out that when I pull out lightly on the mixing control knob, the sound works fine) the projector was playing back with a clear picture and synced to the sound, but almost in slow motion. It won't play at at all at 24 fps, but will play at 18 both directions, just really slow.

Any advise on what to do? Did the liquid compressed air on the circuit board cause this? This would seem unlikely to me because it does still play and functions properly, just not at the right speed. Perhaps it is a motor issue with it grabbing the rubber plates, as I've read about on this forum?

I've only transferred a couple of the films, so I really don't want to have to go buy another projector if at all possible. Also I really like the projector and would love to be able to use it.

Thanks so much!

Steve

on my wild guess - yes,the rubber driven disk might had given up. The drive wheel then slips when trying to drive the mech. hence the slow speed.
The other possibility is that something is blocking the drive wheel from making a firm contact with the driven disk. Let's see it while in action if anything is struggling.

True liquid air is not practical so cans contain gasses compressed into liquids. Unfortunately you did not help the interior of your Eumig by using it.
Look at the drive system by the motor. In forward and reverse mode the motor tilts and drives one of two large black discs by contact. It is possible that they are now slippery and cannot be driven at the correct speed.
Carefully clean both discs, and the small metal "knob" that drives them, with isopropyl alcohol.
Hopefully the projector will now be able to speed up.

To restore your Eumig, I suggest that you clean both rubber discs with lighter fuel.(DANGER !! NO SMOKING) Then clean the driving disc too. These projectors are superb but after 60 years or so they need re lubrication. I've just done mine. This is what you have to do:1. Remove back cover. 2. Place projector on its side and add one drop of fine machine oil to each of the horizontal shaft bearings. 3. Add 2 drops to the upper motor bearing. 4. The lower motor bearing is awkward to get at so proceed as follows. Cut a piece of cardboard 1cm x 10cm and slightly curl the bottom end. Add 2 drops of oil onto the cardboard and insert it between the motor casting and the fan housing. This should ease things up and I hope it all works for you. Mine now runs very sweetly. You can also add a small quantity of molybdenum disulphide grease to the claw mechanism and all the gear wheels. Replace the back cover and test.
