I think to have 2 machines with bad motors is rare, if not even one. I haven't heard of anyone with a bad motor as of yet here, so I agree that some test are necessary!
These japanese made elmos are made for longevity. I hope we can get you up and running.

I can't help with an Elmo diagnosis, but I did have trouble with a Chinon 7500 where its motor would not run.
The trouble was traced to two faulty capacitors which were blowing the motor's fuse.
Does the Elmo ST 180E have a motor fuse?

I'm going to chime in here as the 4th opinion in agreement with Steve, Matt, and Maurice. In the dozens of projectors I've worked on... the ones where the motors didn't run were all related to bad components. That's not to say motors can't go bad...it's just not common.
