Hello...latest problem, in mid reel it starts to slow down, then pick up, then eventually struggle to turn....belts are fine, i suspect the motor. Does that sound right?

I've had similar problems with Elmo STs, which this one is a close cousin.

This may help:

Unplug the machine
Grab the film speed switch
slide it briskly back and forth about 10 times

Try it and see if it's gotten better.

The big thing with the motor is worn brushes. When one of mine had that I started to get buzzing on the audio. It was so bad it actually was getting picked up on an AM radio anywhere in the house.

thanks! now, my next question....where is the film speed switch? i have a reel stuck on there midway and as it totally stopped even in reverse, i watched as the vertical belt came off the track

There should be a control panel on the side or back with various switches and jacks. My speed select is labeled "18 24", but being for transfer, I think yours would have different numbers.

You should be able to remove a film mid-reel:

See page 16 in this link.

Control of film speed appears to be just below the carrying handle. Click, then again for enlargement.

this is all real helpful (REEL helpful?) i don't have a switch, just a varispeed which i massaged a bit as suggested. two things i notice with back cover off...there was a machine whine which has currently subsided but the vertical belt during reverse, comes off the track....too much play? i dismissed belts as the problem, thinking the motor whine was the issue, maybe it's the belts. although they look new, the vertical one seems looser than it should be

It sounds like it could be the governor circuit board ! If that goes bad then the motor will not run! Also this machine takes the same motor as the st180 E and ETC models! I have a couple used ones in stock!
