I have all their films on DVD. I would have to say some of my favorites shorts are Beau Hunks, this is a 30 minute short. Chickens Come Home ( I'd like to get this one on 8mm). My favorite silents are Wrong Again, Do Detectives Think & Should Married Men Go Home.

Personal Favorites:

The Music Box (sound, 25 minutes)
Them Thar Hills (sound, 20 minutes)
You're Darn Tootin' (silent with musical score, 20 minutes)
Busy Bodies (sound, 20 minutes)

I have "Putting Pants on Philip", their first film together. It's Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, but since they haven't developed their "Stan and Ollie" personas yet I don't like it a huge amount. (Historical Value...)

25 minutes, meaning two reels?

Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on December 18, 2012, 11:01 AM:

My "The Music Box" showed up from E-bay on a single 800 foot reel, but if I remember right the original Blackhawk packaging would have been 2 400 foot (120 Meter) reels.

The funny part is I think I got it cheaper since people with projectors capable of 600 feet or less were less likely to bid! Considering the reputation of this movie it didn't get many bids. (Cost me the price of a bigger takeup reel: no free rides in life...)

The rest of them are all single 400 footers

Hi Vidar, what a loaded question!
Everyone has their favourite and despite some great re-mastered dvd's, there's nothing quite like on 8mm.
I've seen the Music Box a ridiculous number of times, meaning it doesn't give me the laughs that my younger daughter gets from it. Each film has it's wonderful and sometimes sublime moments for us.
If you are interested, I have Way Out West on super 8, on 3 x 400' spools. have a fabulous Christmas!!!

What are you looking to get for that?

3x400' would that mean a full feature? (I guess movies were a bit shorter in the thirties

The thing about the Music Box that always gets to me is Ollie's interaction with the camera. Either he or Stan do something dopey and Ollie winds up on the losing end with Stan standing close by looking mildly befuddled.

-he stops, looks right in the lens and seems to be asking us "Do you SEE what I have to put up with?!"

I enjoy most of my L&Hs, but this one always makes me laugh.

Now you're talking :-)

Yes, I'd be interested then ... Remember the shipping problem from last time ... I am not sure you'll need to send with anything but boat, as I am in no hurry, but if you could check the two cheapest options, I'll decide then ... Thanks for this offer

I have a lovely Blackhawk sound edition of "The Music Box" on a 600ft reel. I just got it on 16mm, so will probably sell the super 8 version in the New Year. My personal favourite is "Towed in a Hole" which always makes me laugh and is one I show to introduce people to Laurel and Hardy. "Tit For Tat" is very funny too.

Jonathan, contact me in the new year, please

I am interested and thanks for all suggestions

If you like "Tit for Tat" you also need a print of "Them Thar Hills". "Tit for Tat" is actually the sequel (-the only sequel L&H ever made) to "Hills" and when you see it you begin to understand why Mr. Hall is so hostile to the Lads!

Elyas, what's your price on Love at First Bite?

Posted by Tony Stucchio (Member # 519) on December 19, 2012, 05:23 PM:

Must haves:
Silent -- BIG BUSINESS, TWO TARS, PUTTING PANTS ON PHILIP, LIBERTY, THE FINISHING TOUCH
Sound Shorts: HELPMATES, THE MUSIC BOX, HOG WILD, TOWED IN A HOLE, THEM THAR HILLS, TIT FOR TAT
Features: SONS OF THE DESERT, WAY OUT WEST

Many other great ones, but this will get you started with an excellent sampling.

Hi Vidar,
Love at first bite is an optical print in real good shape, no lines or spots. It does have a fade, however. Asking $60 for the reels. Thanks again and lemme know when you want to send the money and have me mail them. By the way, I don't think you want to go the ship route for postage as it isn't reliable I hear [Frown] ... Think about it and let me know and thanks again!!!

"The Hoosegow" is worth it too,if only for the messy ending.

Almost all of them are worth it. For sound shorts, avoid BERTH MARKS and TWICE TWO. For silents shorts (of those released by Blackhawk), avoid 45 MINUTES FROM HOLLYWOOD and LOVE'EM and WEEP -- these aren't really "L&H" comedies. In fact, Blackhawk's 45 MINUTES doesn't even include the Laurel scene. For features, most people aren't fond of THE BOHEMIAN GIRL, but I like it.

I recommend getting all the ones release by Blackhawk -- yes -- ALL of them.

"Our Relations" is great fun and well constructed, too. I have most of their sound films on super 8 or 16mm but I only watch a handful of them regularly. I will be watching "The Fixer Uppers" at the weekend. It's one of their few films with a Christmas link. They play Christmas card salesmen.

Big Business is another good one that has a Christmas link (they are selling Christmas trees).

"Perfect Day" is wonderful too. To get big laughs from saying "goodbye" continuously is quite a feat!
