Okay, Holy Grail stuff here folks, Derann feature on Super 8 but will anyone buy at this price?

http://www.ebay.de/itm/S-8-CLOSE-ENCOUNTERS-OF-THE-3rd-KIND-DERANN-FEATURE-SCOPE-SPECIAL-ED-STEREO-/222174541579?hash=item33baa2770b:g:Bn0AAOSweWVXeAEg

I think I'm pretty serious about cine and have xenon machines, etc but I would never consider it... Think I'd be too scared to run it in case of a pile up or scratch. I wouldn't be able to enjoy the movie.

"ONCE IN A LIFETIME CHANCE - ONLY 12 PRINTS WORLDWIDE" Only 12 prints ??? Is that true ?

well, even its the only one ever printed i can't say that price would do it for me. At the end of the day i have the full film plus extras on a remastered anniversary disc, it's obviously not the same as the reel deal but all i need do is put my £9.99 disc via my epson projector and i get to see the same film on an even bigger screen with superior 5:1 dolby stereo sound.
Remember my reality check? Its these very things that make you go look and think, Really? It's a movie, a darn fine movie but almost 2 grand? Not for me, but good luck to the seller, there appears to be many suckers out there paying wayyyyyy over the odds for some films. [Wink]
By the way, this particular movie is one of my all time favourites, i always wanted to own it, the 400 was a waste of time, (in my view) but the feature is rare thanks to Derann being very naughty, otherwise they would have been able to have many more printed.

I agree with all the comments except I'd have absolutely no fear at all of running it, it's simply an absurd amount of money to spend on any one film unless of course, you're a millionaire film collector of which I'm certainly not!

When I purchased mine from Derann many years ago, I was told the total number of prints was 10. It is a beauty.

I got a PM with a link to Ossi's review of a print he was lucky to find. The original number of the Derann version releases seem to have been 19.
There is no doubt it is a price 99% of the collectors would never pay for a copy. I'm still not ready to pay 300 € for a film although it seems to become a "normal" price for some titles. But I have to say I already have plenty of films so that's a consolation for all those I will never own :-)

I agree with Andrew, if i did buy it i would most certainly be watching it, several times over as i did in 1977 when it was released in the cinema's, in fact i watched the afternoon performance and stayed in situ and watched the next one.
I also heard it 19 released. i dont think we will ever be sure of this unless one of the Ex Derann boys could confirm? [Wink]

At nearly two grand Douglas, I don't know about a beauty, it'd have to be Marilyn Monroe for me to want to own it!!

The real thing circa 1953! [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Wink]

That price will probably drop. I would pay $700 for some Super 8 features, but that's my limit. Close Encounters, however, I wouldn't be interested in anyway. Mind you, I'm the biggest Steven Spielberg fan, but this one film has an ending that disagrees with me. Has anyone else ever been bothered by it? It's a question of morals in the main character - Steven himself said that if he could do it over again, he probably wouldn't have the Richard Dreyfuss character abandon his family.
I can imagine an ending where Roy remembers his family just before leaving on the ship and decides to go back home.
What a shame, because the rest of the movie is stunning.

Guys, we are super 8mm collectors or maniac. So someone must be even more maniac from us.

We say it is crazy to spend €1950 for a F/L film while with a £9.99 disc we can enjoy the same.

Ok... Some other people also say, "I don't understand [your name]. He bought a Tom & Jerry film, a 7 minute film, for £35, while I can buy a £5 disc and it has 12 stories on it"

Since this is a collector forum, no one knows what is inside the mind of every collectors. There are long time collectors who become pickier and pickier, but there are also new comers who just have few films and are willing to spend that much money.

Also taken into account those non 8mm collectors who just want to have the memorabilia of certain films or directors in any format.

So I don't see any benefit to discuss the price. This is a collectors forum and everything may happen.

My 2 cents though,

I bought mine for around $400 but had to have it re-recorded as it was in German. I still miss the part where Neary goes crazy and throws all the junk in his house to make the Devil's Tower. I've seen this film, Star Wars, and Ben Hur all in German before I had it re-recorded. It was interesting.

I have all the Tom & Jerry cartoons on DVD but 99% of the time watch a Super 8 print as it takes too long to load and find the cartoon I want to watch from the DVDs.

And they are far more fun on Super 8mm Brian! [Smile] [Smile]

Larry, you got your print for a great price there, and even this one would need recording again for the vast majority of perspective new owners.

Daniel , i have never even given that a thought, way to PC thinking for me mate:mad:
Thats half the problem with the world unfortunately, it's a movie, he didn't really leave his family. [Big Grin]
In fact they left him half way through the movie so no problem there. [Wink] And if Steven Spielberg is actually really saying that then wow, get over it, he made that back in 77.

It is a rare title but there are more prints about than rumours wiould have it. I knew four collectors who each had prints within a small geographic region so the story of 14 worldwide doesn't hold up. There were two sources for the print and it was available to buy a year or two after the fall out over copyright. For obvious reasons the exact numbers will never be quantified.

Good points there Winbert, i am sure there are definatly collectors who will stop at no price but i dont know any who would go to these lengths to pay two grand.
You are right to make-the comparison with the tom and Jerry's but most people can and do pay 20-50 for short films because it is within there reach and sanity. [Wink]

£5.00-£7.50 delivered or even less 2nd hand on Blu Ray.

Crazy !!!!

I`d be worried running a 16mm print even through an Eiki if I paid that for it.

Best Mark.

I've seen some prices for Tom & Jerry 16mm prints go for more than $200.

If it was a title I really, really wanted I would pay 2 grand. Yes its expensive but you only go around the moon so many times in this lifetime. And if you watched that film over and over on your preferred medium of choice..well..that really would be priceless! Well not priceless... in this case..2 grand!! [Smile]

I'd be worried about running it if it were a 16mm print Mark, also!

Alan, you ARE the 0.00000001% recurring, my friend!! [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Wink]

It's all about demand. I mean, hey, I remember a Derann scope feature of STAR WARS, sold by a member of this very forum, in only fair condition (it had scratching and all, and he even had screenshots showing the scratching on it) and he got 1,800.00 for it.

I've got to admit, if i was a fellow lucky to have a good deal more money, I'd be glad to pay that for it, even with owning the 1977 original original feature in scope.

Posted by Alan Rik (Member # 73) on July 07, 2016, 10:51 AM:

Well looks like it sold outside of Ebay.
Anyone here get it?

I'd like to think that someone who belongs here got it. Hey, crazy people like us desrve these rare print. It does have lovely colors, to be sure. If i end up with the money someday, I'll snatch it off of whoevers hands ...

Unless they're like me ...

"You'll have to snatch that 1977 scope STAR WARS out of my cold dead hands!!!!" [Smile]

Has it been sold do you think?
It states taken off due to "lost or broken" [Big Grin] [Big Grin] yeah right,
This is why ebay needs to go back to a listing fee dependent on your start price. It stops this nonsense. [Big Grin] (only in my opininon) [Wink]

Tom,if you look on the other place you'll see who now is the proud owner of this print but without having to pay the full asking price thankfully by all accounts. [Smile] [Wink]

I'm curious about whether the official Derann batch of prints had box artwork - which I've never seen. Could Doug kindly share a pic of this if it did?

Adrian,

My print (purchased used) arrived in a film can with no artwork.

Mmmmm, film can. In my opinion, that makes it even more special!
