I'm looking for a 1600ft super 8 spool for a take up. I only like metal spools as plastic ones always seem to have hoards of sideward movement causing problems and scraping sounds which is very distracting.

Recently recieved my T2 and noticed part 2 is on a 1600, you can imagine wot started to happen when the film was drawing to a close and all i was using was a 1200 Elmo take up. [Frown]

Hi Tom

Why not break it down on to 1200 foot reels to begin with? I have the same print title, you could make it up like I have listed below:

600ft reel 1 on big reel 1

600 ft reels 2 & 3 on big reel 2

600 ft reels 4 & 5 on big reel 3

The big reels are 1200 ft.

I've filled reel one (extra space) with the scope short Pod Race from Phantom Menace.

Anyway, just an idea for you. Sorry I don't have the big reel you need. But I understand your concerns.

Hi Chip. Thank you for the good idea, i did think along that road but i wanted to try and keep it as a two parter, nothing worse than getting into it and then another intermission,
if i had two elmo 1200HDs id do the reel change overs. [Wink]

Aw, Tom.... 9 days sooner and I could've given you five eBay auctions for one SupaSpool each. I myself have the plastic Tayloreels, so if you should get desperate you're welcome to one - but I understand you'd rather have a metal reel.

Actually you can prevent a plastic 1600ft Tayloreel from wobbling by, say, adhering small pieces of tape to the inside of the center hub (they made it slightly too big to sit snugly on the spindle), or by putting a large washer on the spindle behind the reel... It's something worth considering.

Heck, if you DO want a plastic reel I'll modify it for you myself to make sure it doesn't wobble, before I ship it to you! [Smile]

EDIT: One more thought I just had, maybe Derann currently has a SupaSpool for sale? Might be worth asking Gary about.

Tom

I had a similar problem and solved it mid reel by taping a few playing cards to the reel on both sides. This allowed me to continue the whole reel without problems.

Heath Robinson yes but it got me out of a fix

Tom

If you do ever find another machine please let me know. I have super 8 changeovers down to rocket science and it is so simple and yet works so incredibly good...................just email me with your questions. Both picture and sound changeovers 100% professionally done. One try and you'll never use a single machine again for multi reelers! [Smile]

Thanks for the help boys, Tony, quite a good idea as this is the only film im likely to own with a 1600ft spool. [Wink]

Well, I bought my plastic Tayloreels from filmclassic.com for $15 apiece (total of 12 reels, 7 of which I then passed on to Dimitrios Kremalis for the same price). That was a few months ago, but I don't think the price has changed in the meantime.

These "Tayloreels" are they the blue plastic ones? These are the only 1600ft spools I will use as the metal Supaspools tend to warp and then rub the GS Reel arms [Frown]
The plastic ones obviously retain their shape [Smile]

Them's the ones, aight... (<-- imagine a bit of a fake Texan accent there) [Wink] ... surprised to hear the metal ones tend to warp, though [Eek!]

They were made out of soft thin ally. It doesnt take much to put them out of true and then they rub the arms or the film scrapes against the flanges.....horrid [Frown]

Tom, I bought a bunch of plastic reels from ebay that are fractionally too big for the GS and need trimming. I have never gotten round to it so if you fancy one to try then email me your address

I'm pretty sure I've put my copy of Terminator 2 on a pair of 1200 foot reels. I'll have to check.

It worth remembering that the black Grasso 1200ft spools actually take more like 1300ft. Also the metal Fumeo spool although again the same size as the Elmo 1200ft spools take 450M.

Hi John, I rewound part two using elmo rewind arms but it spills over by about 300-400 feet. Tony, e mail being sent soon. [Wink]

What I'd like to know is where one can find genuine 1600ft super-8 reels... those with the 13-3/4 inch diameter. I think the only company that offers such reels for sale is Wittner-Kinotechnik and I'm not even sure about that right now. In any case, their offerings are PRICEY, and that's before even thinking about shipping overseas. [Frown]

Jan, Grasso in Italy made them.

Just like Tom, part two of my T2 just makes it on a 1600'...er...too.

Kev,

so where do I get those then? [Smile]

(P.S.: "Yoda of Elmos?" Awesome [Big Grin] )

Doug,

I could have been making it all up. I went to check my copy of T2 the other night but couldn't get into the cupboard for all the wonderful pressies blocking the way.

I checked last night and I indeed have Terminator 2: Judgment Day on 2x1200 foot reels. Don't know where all you others are going wrong. Perhaps mine are just bigger than yours. No surprise there!!!

Jan, Most of the dealers will have some of the Grasso black plastic spools in stock. Try Ian at Perrys and Phil at Classic Home Cinema. They have a slightly smaller centre hub comparred to the std Elmo type 1200 footers. These may be what JC used for his print of T2.

Kev, I thought you said Grasso made actual 1600ft. reels. I'm not looking for any 1200ft-sized ones with smaller cores...
