I'm looking for an Elmo ST-1200 HD projector. In the UK preferably, I don't really want to pay huge overseas shipping costs.

However, all offers considered!

Thanks

You just missed one of my old machines an ST1200 HD MO sold by Ian of Perry's only a week or so ago on E Bay, however Chris I think there is another on there at the moment if memory serves me right.

See my other comments regarding these machines if you are new to the hobby. IMHO and experience there are much "kinder" machines to film than these, though having said all that, if you can put up with the "racket" from these and find one of the few none scratching machines, then they are very good aside from doing any synchronous recording on them.

If you think you may ever wish to do any synchronous recording, then go for an electronically driven DC drive machine [Smile]

Yeah, I have seen one on eBay, it doesn't have a lens though unfortunately.

I'm just waiting for pictures from David, but it sounds good so far! [Smile]

Thanks! I've only ever used a Bell and Howell 1.2 Lumina, so the 1200 HD is like a Ferarri compared to it! [Big Grin]

I've read a few threads on here now, so I think I know what to look out for.

With regards to cleaning, how often should it be cleaned and what is the best way to clean it that won't cause damage?

For the operating side of the machine:-

Clean the entire path Chris, just as in the same way as any other projector, paying particular attention to all green plastic guides. Check all of these at close range by dismantling periodically as they do all wear over time.

The main point to check on these is the the initial guides and rollers at the top shoe feed sprocket. Get used to dismantling the whole top sprocket guide assembly regularly on these. Clean separately using soapy water on the removed parts until spotless. Leave to dry and then pollish with silicone, all green parts. Clean the tiny rollers separately and ensure they are re-assembled the correct way round so the roller tracks align correctly with those on the green guide beneath. Lube the bores on the tiny rollers with machine oil (3in1 etc) to ensure very free rotation of the rollers.

Ensure all films are threaded after using a bevelled edge cutter and pay attention to top and bottom loops being retained correctly at all times. Also pay attention to film entering and exiting the sound head section and keep sound head section clean with isopropyl alcohol. Check guides leading into sound head section also regularly for wear. Also check there is plenty of "meat" left on the stepped sides of the green initial film feed guide.

As for frequency of cleaning, it depends on your results from doing the above, but in my case, it was very frequently on all five machines I have owned.

For the drive side of the machine:-

Check the clutch / drive mechanism works well in both 18fps & 24fps without slippage.

Check the shutter peripheral belt is either removed or replaced regularly before it turns to goo!

Check the lamp diffuser works in still frame mode and moves up completely out of the way, as it should when film is running. Adjust mechanism if necessary.

Check all nylon gears are adequately lubricated with Alvania
grease.

Check the clutch mechanisms for correct torque on rewind and take up spindle mechanisms, adjust if necessary if friction linings and spring adjustment allow.

Check all nylon gears for cracks/splits or wear to the teeth particularly the high torque rewind gear

Electronics, Magnetic head and amp section on these I have found are usually flawless even after many hard years of use. May need some servisol switch lubricant if contacts have oxidised, but otherwise generally speaking, they have a very good reliable amplifier section on the HD model. No use for re-recording in sync though as already pointed out & can lose lower loop very easily when projecting optical films on the HD model due to the changes made on the sound head mechanism to the original ST1200.

More checks than buying a used car, I know, but all are valid.

Good luck!

What?????... Ahh ok I just worked it out... ST1200HD marketed in 1978,still selling at dealers in mid 80's according to my movie maker mags, maybe even later. GS 1200 still selling new in the late 80's possibly later for Mk III model plus P Com / Xenon. As for 16, no idea. 16mm forum will no doubt have the answers.

No idea what an Elmo 60 is??

Which Bell & Howell? 16 or 8 ? DCT / DCM / TQ III etc etc??

Given that all machines in service are nearly "10 years old or many more", more often than not, all the more reason to recommend that the above servicing has, and will be, regularly carried out on these machines. They do tend to need a lot of regular use to keep them healthy and plenty of TLC, not to mention the patience of a saint, which nowadays I don't have the time in my life for all that, so I choose Beaulieu or Bauer where all that level of maintenance is totally unnecessary.
