Worm Gear Replacement

Worm gear replacement is major overhaul. To change it requires EXTENSIVE disassembly of the mechanism (once it's removed from the projector of course!). Once you start dissembling the mechanism you lose all the critical adjustments which require the special (expensive) Bell & Howell tools & jigs to readjust/realign. The new gears are colored black to distinguish them from the old style plastic

It takes at least 4 to 6 hours to open / replace that worm gear / and to REASSEMBLE your B&H correctly.

Average cost worm gear replacement job costs around $300 per machine plus parts.

One could replace only the cracked worm gear, but it is almost the farthest thing into the projector. Half the labor is expended just accessing it. And, the projector probably wouldn't be happy and might have wow in sound and picture instability, because sprocket spindles may be dry of lubrication, a sprocket gear may be warped, sound head needs attention, shuttle needs adjustment, uneven take up drive, etc., etc.

Hi Leon I know a very handy chap who is quite reasonable. I can give him a ring to see how he is fixed and if he can do it, he is home based, so much better value, and he`s very good on doing the worms etc.

I`d think seriously about trying it yourself as lots to go wrong etc.

Ive send crack worms that last for a long time then they come apart and lock up the works

Hi Leon. I look at it this way, if the worm gear has gone and needs replacing it is worth having it done as once complete chances are it wont need doing again in your life time. Within the UK replacement and the part itself usually works out about £100 but well done worth every penny. Buying another used machine you could also find yourself with another worm gear issue perhaps?

I have 3 Hell & Bowells and they all have the old yellow worm gear - all worn. Like Richard said "if it runs -run it". When mine finally lose all gear functionality then I pack them up one at a time and ship them out to Mr. Patchett for repair. I would invest in his time and services because chances are, when he's done with them, they'll outlive me and like someone said already I wouldn't want to invest a couple of hundred dollars to get a clunker when I can be assured that my babies will be healthy again. In addition, my two daughters will have some nice working relics to remind them of Dad's favorite past-time.

Any service work that i do. I spend more free time to make sure your getting a Run able projector back.
I go through the whole thing and even run film through the projector for at least 2 hours Just to be sure the projector is in good running condition Before i send it back
To be honest sometimes something else gos bad so i try to make amens
