Hi all,

my exciter lamp went out and I noticed the previous one was a BRK. When looking on ebay, I found a better offer of lamps as a lot, but they are all BAKS. I, however, also noted that they are the same V and Amp rating as the BRK (42, 0.775 Amp). Should I get them anyways or not :/? Thanks in advance for your always awesome help [Big Grin]

No those lamp types are not interchangeable. BRK lamps have a vertical filament, whereas BAK lamps have a horizontal filament. The exact form of the filament is projected onto the sound track by means of the optical sound reader's optics. So if you use the wrong type, you will have very low sound output or no sound at all.

Lamps manufacturers were vicious by making almost identical lamps that differ only by the filament position. I was once trapped and realized my mistake thanks to Maurice from this forum who told me the trick...

The exciter lamps used for Elmo and Eiki/Elf projectors differ from those used by Bell & Howell projectors.
They have the same ratings, fitting, and look exactly the same at quick glance.
However, the lamps in Elmo & Eiki/Elf are used on their sides, whilst those in Bell & Howells are used in a vertical position.
Therefore, this is why the filament in Elmo & Eiki/Elf lamps is vertical, the filament position in a Bell & Howell lamp is horizontal.

The same 4V, 0.75A lamps are known in the UK as G/27 (vertical filament, horizontal mounting) and G/29 (horizontal filament, vertical mounting)
