Hello everyone,
I recently came into ownership of a Bell & Howell 2585 machine. Unfortunately,it suffers from the dreaded cracked worm gear that seems to afflict this model (and possibly others.)I know that a new part can be had for around $40,but my understanding is that the labor involved (including the proper tools) make this a time consuming (and difficult) job. Has anyone here done this work themselves,and if so any pointers on how to approach it with success?

Replacing a worm is not something an inexperienced person should attempt. Whilst the actual replacement of the worm gear could be possible, it is all the adjustments which are necessary afterwards which require skill and knowledge.

re gear I have changed about 20 gears and are tricky to do its takes me a couple of hours ,biggest problem is the new gear you are fitting if this is not machined right the gear can jam minutes after you have fitted it right
