I just ran into a 16MM western, (it was on ebay as a super 8 print ... which appears to be quite rare, as I had a hard time finding any info on the film, and the film stock markings are ...

Kodak 54 Safety Positive

... does the "54" refer to 1954 or does it refer to something else? i know it's a fairly old print, as the optical track is not modern black with a white wavey line, but the old school optical soundtrack. The original film came out in 1950, so the film stock is obviously, only 62 years old or so at the oldest.

It's a western entitled "The Last Bullet" or "Crooked River", by the way. Interesting find, anyhow.

Hey Osi, just noticed that you didn't get a reply to this after several weeks.

The "54" is a reference to a slitter position or some other such technical trivia that has no significance to us now. As you know, the Kodak date codes are the certain clue as to an approximate year that a print originated, and that's the ONLY clue we get. [Smile]

That was nice stock and, if well printed, should look great.

I wonder if the Agfa S1 etc mean the same thing in 8mm as I know the colour stocks have those numbers but a B&W standard 8 print I have is shown as Agfa Gaevert S1?

Osi
If the film is on Kodak stock it may have a date code. This comprises squares, dots and plus signs. All in various combinations.
Refer to the following table.

On Agfa, S1 is a slitter code.
