I've seen it in 8mm reels that comes in a new projector. I would like a 16mm version so I can ship reels between worrying it getting bent. Any tricks of the trade to prevent deformation/damage of reels during shipping?

Hi Robert...Here's one suggestion...I haven't tried this with 16mm...but in theory it should work.

1) Cut a strip of heavy poster board the width size a little wider than 16mm film and the circumference of the outer portion of the reel (recessed about 1/4" from the edge).

2) Attach the two ends with a staple to form a circle.

3) Place the circle around the reel so it fits on the inside of the outer edge of the reel. The outer edges of the reel should now be secured from collapsing and held snugly in place against the poster board insert.

Of course wrapping it in bubble-wrap will give it additional protection.

Great idea Janice.
My Elmo ST-600 came in its original box and the 600ft reel was packaged with polystyrene,a complete circle cut in half that just slides in on both sides to keep its perfect shape.
Brilliant idea as there's nothing worse than a buckled reel that causes the film to catch as it winds.

Yes Clinton I have made those same kind of spacer inserts for 8mm reels out of cardboard. I layer 2-3 piece depending on the thickness of the cardboard. However...This is not an easy method. Cutting cardboard into custom shapes takes a lot of time and patients. Although possible...I don't see it being practical for 16mm.

You could just use carefully folded newspaper as it's only to be used for travelling.
