I can see why the bidding for this item went so high. This is totally unique footage that has not been seen before so therefore it has some historic value. I wouldn't have gone much above $5 myself but rare footage is rare footage. It is kind of wonderful though that some peoples home movie footage has through time acquired some value to historians. Who knows what other treasures are lurking out there waiting to be discovered.

I believe the estate of Marilyn Monroe was in the top ten among biggest moneymaking dead celebrities in 2005 (the list was topped by... guess who? [Wink]

) so it makes perfect sense that any imagery of Marilyn Monroe would be valuable, as it could be used in documentaries, manipulated for commercials, etc.

There was a similar "funny thing" -seemingly ordinary item where bidding went through the roof- that happened at an auction over here a few months back: At a fine arts auction, an elderly couple put up an antique painting "painted in the tradition of Rubens", bidding start suggested at a few thousand dollars. What happened was international art collectors found out there might be a chance this was actually a GENUINE Rubens, got into the bidding, which ended at...

...just over 30 million dollars. [Roll Eyes]

The seller (nedfander) has once discussed here as a good seller in promoting his just newly found home movies from nowhere.

He once sold a 50 feet home movies containing some pictures of fire trucks for hundreds dollars!! Another day he sold a 50 feet home movies of old fashioned schools also for another hundreds dollars. I have found that he sometime bought home movies from Ebay where he would probably be having checked them to find an interesting reels.

The way he's advertising his item was so unique by writting a very long (the longest I ever seen!) description, which we knew it was not directy related to the movie's contain. However. a lot of buyer were attracted and influenced by his description. Nevertheless this is legal.

Now he made another record!! Congrats!

Considering the content, I thought it went cheap. Watch out on cable for a doco. Marilyn: Behind the scenes!

This stock footage is rare stuff especially something fresh. I can't think of too many other stars that would be better to have captured on 8mm. There would be a lot more of Marilyn out there too considering all the promos, parades and appearances she made. If you scan the crowds in these appearances you can see heaps of 8mm and 16mm cameras churning away.

What makes footage of this era even more desirable is that most amateur footage was in colour, yet most professional newsreel and TV footage was in B & W.

I think this reel is his price worth. I have few homemovies from Elvis shows from the 70´s They are very bad quality but I like it because they are unique. I sold few years ago 2x 600 reels 18 frames per sec. and silent for 150 Euro each (it is realy bad, a elvis show in bad quality and without sound). I still have the sound reels (also 2x 600) maybe I get also big $ one day for this.

It is true,
I believe that a stock shop Library purchased
this reel and that they will use it in
a documentary.

It's difficult to believe that a collector
would bid this high on an ebay item,
but then again an original 16mm print of Brats with
the original pre - 1937 soundtrack sold for
over $900 dollars last year
