Hi I just wondered what sort of area or space everyone`s film collection take`s up. Mine is fairly modest as usually have to sell a bit to buy a bit etc. Family and so on.
So anyway had a tidy up and put all of mine in one place today.
20 years collecting and they all just nicely fitted in to a new card box a toaster just came it 9" x 7" x 12"
Best Mark.

So, how many films would that be, Mark?

A Queen Anne cabinet with glass serves as to hold some of the Blackhawk 400' in the living room, while the majority are in the bedroom corner in Georgia-Pacific paper boxes (8 right now), holding much of the 400' 600' and other shorts - By my calculations I will need 2 more such boxes to conclude with - Shorty

I'm not sure exactly how to measure the size of my collection,
but, here goes.

I have a large 4 shelf ... shelf. It is completely to the brim filled with films.

The refridgerator holds all my eastman prints, and these fill up approximately 80 percent of the fridge, (it's a regular large size fridge), but there are no films in the freezer section ...

... yet.

I do know that I have 40 optical sound features, at least 20 magnetic sound features, scores of cartoons and many 400ft Blackhawks, (it looks like, from here, at least 40 of them, mostly laurel and hardys and Chaplins.

I`ve got about 30 16mm trailers all in myself, mainly in card boxes on 100 feet plastic spools.
Before our nipper numbers increased I was a bit of a bad lad on film numbers but not these days. I once had 3 or 4 16mm features at once and super 8`s too and other times up to 8 or so super 8 optical features and shorts as well. But never had so much really. I did have 25 std 8 silent features at one time and shorts as well, that was a sizeable bunch.
I do have known of people who have roms lined with shelves, many bought new, but many never watched at all and some just the once.
Best Mark.

Two upright old fridge freezers, motors removed holding about fifty thousand feet of Standard eight and Sixteen millimetere footage of mostly social history home movies.Plus some rare Std8 silent features. The oldest is a 1928 home movie,16mm,from Germany.
All stored in these airtight units out in the garage. And then there is the ten thousand feet of super8 n the back bedroom!
Now the equipment collection,.......where I can hide it! [Eek!]

Kevin, there are NEVER, too many!

... except for a few small titles, all I have are required viewing.

Kevin...

Ditto. You'll have to help me thin it out [Wink]

BTW I couldn't lay my hands on a SMPTE alignemt film for you but I do have a test film to help you check the alignment of your 16mm gate. The film contains a cross-hatch and centre target and does the job just as well as the SMPTE film.

165 Features mounted on 1200 foot reels stored in 16mm cans. Actually built a giant wood cabinet to store them all and it cost the same amount in materials as does an average new feature...about $450.00. With both doors open and standing back about 10 feet looking at it, this is quite the impressive site. And not everything fits in here. I still have to keep some of the prints in the booth under the rewind bench (less than 12).

Hi Jan

I quote the optical movie, "Yellowbeard....

"They're going to have to kill me before I die."

(To answer Jan's question/comment.)

Actually though, one of my favorite lines from that movie was:

Character 1: "You have acute hearing sir." (Emphasis on the word HEARING)

Character 2: "That's not my ear ring, sir." (in reply)

or something like that.... LOL

A carefully designed 10x10 foot cold room holds close to 200 35mm and 70mm features, as well as a couple Super 8mm features for me. Film doesn't have to take up a lot of space if it is managed properly.

Curious, Brad ...

Out of all the films you have, you have a few Super 8 features.

What is lucky enough to grace your collection?

I have two cabinets ( approx 2.5' x 6' x 20" deep ) one and a half are filled with 16mm, the other half holds Super8. Another 2' x 2' box holds the remaining Super 8. The film room holds approx 100 features on 35mm in addition to the cabinets and box. I have (approx) 50 features on Super 8, 50 features on 16mm, with various shorts and cartoons in all three formats. I only have one feature, one cartoon and two trailers in 70mm ( got any 70mm hand-me-downs Brad ?? )

I wonder how many guys you need to help you carry that 70mm feature reel around. [Eek!]

Films at my house seem to act like the Tribbles of Star Trek fame.....start out with a few shorts in the early 60's..and now they are everywhere. 300 features 16 and 8mm ...probably 800 shorts ....they fill up two floor to ceiling shelves in one little anteroom...one floor to ceiling shelve unit in the screening room itself...two shelf units in the closet of the screening room...they are under the futon in the screening room...in little file and drawer units in various spots...and always a few without a permanent home. In fact just before March, I had to go in with pen and paper and diagram each storage place and what films were where..so I could locate them when I needed them. It was getting out of hand. Captain Kirk would not like it.
