Hi Paul

I am wondering if you could help me with a project for super 8.

Perhaps you are familiar with the Neumade Brass Adapter. This is a 16mm based item that converts to super 8. It is used on hand crank rewinds for film work. It normally is made to be used with a finger switch that holds the reel on to the rewind shaft. The adapter is set to the shaft by a set screw to keep it tight.

A picture of these adapters can be found in the forum. See page 5 of “Your Screening Room Pictures” found within the 8mm forum section below General Yak from the main page. Once there, scroll down past my cinema pictures to the post with picture from Claus Harding.

Now, here’s how you can help me:

I understand you are a retired Engineer. So if I am right, perhaps you can take this picture and come up with my new idea that I can send to Neumade.

Working with those adapters as shown in the pictures…

I want to keep everything the same, and the only thing I want to change is the shaft where the super 8 reel slides on to the adapter:

Take the current ½” shaft and make it ½ inch LONGER. Then, on the extended part of the shaft, add a ¼ x 20 thread, to put a wing nut against the reel.

The purpose of the change:

I am currently working on a new generation of my Super 8 Tower. This will incorporate a 16mm silent projector as the drive system for super 8 take up. The silent speed of the 16mm projector will be just above the sound speed of super 8. Which means it will be matched even though feet per minute would be different between formats.

It is noted that the silent projectors for 16mm that I plan to use do not have the finger switches, so this design allows to adapter to be used without having the super 8 reel slip off during play. Of course, if this were to happen it could be disaster.

If you have any questions, please email me. But I think you can figure this out. I’ll bring an old set of brass adapters to you in April if you’ve never seen them and if you need to take measurements. I plan to bring out my new Tower this summer, so there is plenty of time to get drafting prints of the new adapter.

Hi Chip,
Bring the part with you when you come. I can model it up on 3D CAD, and make the necessary changes/modifications on the computer and supply a machine drawing.
My cell phone is out right now, but I have your number and will call you towards the end of March.
