I don't know how many of you usually attend flea markets. Here in Milan there are 3 different every sunday plus other two once a month.
Sometime you may find real bargains on items regarding our collection, other times oddities, many other times things sold for more than their real value, with conditions varying from very good to terrible.
Lots of times you may also see 15mt reels with private film that the owners decided to throw away (and this makes me really sad, as it's the same thing as throwing pictures in the rubbish).
During these years I found lots of things but the ones that remain in my mind (and in my house) are:
- a Pathe DS8 BTL camera in great condition
- a Fujica Z800
- some film negatives and work prints of documentaries (including a 16mm negative on Formula 1 with Niki Lauda, and a rare Barilla documentary in super8)
- some lenses, a couple of projectors and some full features.

But the strangest and sillyest thing was found today. There were two 35mm cans with some 16mm rolls inside and no titles on the cans. I had a quick look and I realized they were negatives, but the perforation was strange. A deeper look and I realized that they were double super8.
I hoped they were some shorts or cartoons and so, when I was back home, I had a looked at the images...
Well... they are porn shorts! I could have imagined everything but that, and I started to laugh!

BTW, every time I go I hope to find a GS1200, but this kind of bargain happens to other people [Mad]

Hi Fabrizio. Very funny and interesting!
I'm really curious about that Barilla Documentary.
Will you please let me know about it, after screening? It would be very kind of you.

I can even imagine your face in discovering those X-rated movies. The same had happened to me so longtime ago. I was supposed to find some cartoons inside the boxes. But, thanks God, the seller took them back.

At least it was a lucky day (I'm referring in general to all itmes you found, X-rated movies included [Big Grin] ).
Ciao! Next time you will find a brand new and shining GS [Razz] .

Hi Gian,
the Barilla documentary is on a 180mt spool, about 20 minutes or so. It's in color and covers all the history of Barilla from 1877 to 1977, using both pictures, newspaper articles and some rarities as one shot of Mina singing for a commercial and the complete maccheroni sequence from "Un americano a Roma" with Alberto Sordi.
Colors have held well and image is well defined. I don't know how many copies were made, I suppose it was a sort of gift to employees or, better, management of Barilla.

I can't tell you how many yard sales, thrift stores and baragin flea markets I've been to, even held table selling at many of them just to see how the other half approaches things - i found many films and machines/accessories, most vendors do not have an idea of value and rely on us collectors to help. In doing so, I've come away with many discount sales of choice items that are as good as retail

I love going to flea markets and finding film related stuff and LP's for my collections.

The two best bargins that were film related:

Chinon 330 sound projector in excellent working order for $8.00!
Canon Canonet 8 standard 8mm camera mint condition and in working order for $1.00!

I sold the projector and I still use the camera.

Bill

Hi Fabrizio. So interesting in reading about that Documentary.
Do you think you are in a position to supply me some screen shots? Thanks.

I have found the odd thing at garage sales etc, the recent was a super 8 400ft sound version of MADIGAN I got for $2!
Most of the cine stuff I see here is just those cheap Hanimex silent projectors, I got a Boots super 8 camera and projector once, the camera goes well but the projector is a heap of junk and is very hard on film.
Never seen a GS for sale at a garage sale before???

I did once find a Kodak Ektasound movie deck in the flea market for a dollar. That was some years ago. The person thought it was a slide projector and he had lost all his slides, so he had no use for them.

Posted by Larry Arpin (Member # 744) on January 17, 2010, 09:56 PM:

Fabrizio-I'm sure those negatives you found had super 8mm perforations on either side of the 16mm negative. Kodak used to make not only a print stock but a negative stock on 7272 that is used to dupe prints. I used this to do an entire feature, half on one side and half on the other. This way I only needed to print one feature at a time. It was very efficient. I know of one feature that was printed this way that one forum member has here.

Sorry, I take the 5th.

Gian, not at the moment. I don't know when the next projection will be or what format I'll screen. Anyway, I'll keep in mind your request and I'll try to shoot some pictures next time I'll screen it.

Larry, you're right, perforations are on both sides. A friend of mine once had a double super8 print with one set of perforation on the side of the film and the other in the centre of the film. He told me that that was the usual standard when you had to print a super8 film. Have you ever heard of this kind of print film?

Posted by Larry Arpin (Member # 744) on January 18, 2010, 12:31 AM:

Yes that is the way to make 2 prints from a 16mm negative. I believe it is referred to as 1-3. The way I described with the double super 8mm negative was contact printed and I believe it is referred to as 1-4.

I got one ! [Wink]

And the strange thing is the flea market seller who texted me (long distance) about the said projector and I got really (really!, I meant it) bargain.

But that will be the ugliest projector in the world [Big Grin] as I shared in other thread.

At least I am now proud to be one of the owner of this machine [Razz]

cheers,

Ah, but Bill you shoulda seen it. It looked like it hadn't seen a run of Filmrenew in years!!! Definitely wasn't worth the tenner.

I did get a budgerigar from a flea market. Not much use in the projector, but it was going "cheep" [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

I would have bought a flea, but they were all busy watching "101 Dalmations"..... [Razz]

The best I managed was sort of indirect. A friend bought me a Rectaflex 1300 (1950s SLR) at a car boot sale for £5, probably very cheap because it wouldn't focus.
I checked the camera over and apart from the focus the rest worked beautifully, I then noticed that the previous user had glued a small eyesight correction lens onto the viewfinder; once I prised this off the camera focused properly.
That apart I've had little success with car boot sales

I don't visit fleamarkets, but here in the Netherlands we have Queensday at april 30th.
At that day everyone is allowed to sell everything they want at the street.
So the whole country is one big fleamarket that day and there are sometimes great bargains to find.
Of course I found some film related things in the course of the years, but nothing really serious.
Only 3 years ago I saw a Catozzo (C.I.R.) M3-16mm 2T Special lying on a carpet.
When I asked for the price they said they wanted € 2,-. [Smile]
It's the latest model and I believe these splicers cost about € 300,- / € 400,- new.
So that was my one and only lucky buy.

I'm reading this enviously as I've NEVER found a film at a comparable event in the UK or a charity shop, etc. My only related purchase is an old, small free-standing Boots screen that I've occasionally made use of.

The very first GS I have bought was found in one of these flea markets. The guys (both previous seller and buyer) did not know anything about 8mm projectors. It was sold for 80 euro [Roll Eyes] .

The guy who had it for that price re-sold it to me for a 'little more'. Ebay... Miracles happen. But probably not always to the right people eh eh eh [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] !

A Beaulieu 708 in mint condition. The guy agreed to trade for my Eumig S810D plus 150 euros. My better half paid for it and gave me the projector as a gift.

I also found a mint Eiki NT2 16mm machines with all acessories (CIR splicer, lenses, extra speaker) for 80 euros.

An Elmo ST1200 two track, unused, or at least,as new, in its box with all accessories, user's manual and two speakers, intact, for 220 euros.

Part of the stock of the biggest 8mm film hire library in Athens, which had closed at least ten years before. Mostly std 8 silent Film Office and Castle, all in identical plastic boxes, neatly titled and in fine condition.Imagine a small mountain,or big hill, one meter high and two meters wide, lying in the street waiting to be dug.For a while I felt just like Scrooge McDuck diving in his vault of money but in the end I came out with only about 15 reels of rarities, leaving the rest for some other lucky collector,as I was not interested in, for example, silent cutdowns of Laurel and Hardy talkies and such.I learned later that the next guy who came, with more money and less particularity than me,bought the whole mountain.

At an old-book fair, I acquired about 60 Stereographs,in fine condition ,ranging from 1883 to the early teens, for less than one euro each.

Many years ago I saw on a flea marked how a man put a Elmo GS 1200 on his sale table, I asked him immediately "how much", he said 50 German Mark (that is 25 Euro). I paid immediately. This all was no longer than 1 minute. After that I checked the GS at home, it was in like new condition and it was with 1.0 lens. After that I sold my old one for 2000 German Mark (about 1000 Euro). And I still use my baby.

On the other end of the flea market...

I once ran across two films, both 200' silent 8mm of 'Rodan' and 'Godzilla vs the Thing' and the seller wanted $50.00 each! I thought to myself...at that price he'll be keeping those films!

I'm glad I already had them!

Hehe, Bill [Wink]

I experienced something like that from a seller once, but the same seller also had amazing bargains!

He had a mint condition original 1967 pressing of "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" by Pink Floyd, selling it for only 50 kr (£5), when it's worth at least twenty times that much! However, he also sold a worn copy of "Ziggy Stardust" which he claimed was rare and signed (it was signed by one of the audio technicians on the album, duuuuuuuh), so he asked for 1500 kr for it! That's £150 for a worn record you can get in mint condition for a quid or two!

About ten years ago, my son surprised me with a great flea market find: an excellent condition Eiki SNT-O (16mm) for which he paid $5.00. This machine has logged hundreds of hours since and still runs like a jewel.

Yes I know that this was a good deal, but the Story as I bought my first Elmo GS 1200 was not a lucky day.
The seller wanted 1000 German Mark and he sold it to me for only 800 German Mark because he had a bad conscience.
Few minutes before I came, he sold another Elmo GS 1200 to another guy, but this was a Xenon machine.
It cost him only 1000 DM (500 Euro) but this was, after a phone call on hold for me.
