I have a few and i think thats for tension so you can adjust the auto takeup, but most have been over turned and dont work anymore, only one 400ft reel i have works when i turn it clockwise or anti-clockwise.

I always use one of these 600' spools as a take-up when running my Eumig S926GL and my Bolex Sound 715 (a Eumig clone). Both of these projectors have their spools in tandem with the take up spool behind the feed spool.
This spool is the only one which will nearly always take up automatically.
As regards the red screw, nothing much seems to happen when it is turned, other than a "click". There is nothing marked to indicate what it is supposed to do, certainly the inner hole gets more narrow when the screw is turned, but for what reason?
Any more ideas?

Like you said Maurice, the inner hole get narrow when its turned and the gap in the spindle hole gets tighter, the gap is very clear to see, this also pulls the sides of the reel in a faction to help the reel take up the leader, you can also use it to stop wobble when mounted by opening it up alittle. My 800 reel has one on each side opposite each other.

I have two of these reels (800') I also like using them as automatic take up reels because they always work!

As for the red screw is this so it will lock the film in the reel? Aren't there some projectors that automatically rewind at the end of a film hands free? [Confused]

I have an 800'. The red button doesn't seem to do anything at all with mine. However being new to the smaller guage - perhaps it's doing something unbeknownst to me!!

Jim, I got two of the 800' footers, I never messed with the red screw, but I really like these reels! Very well made. [Smile]

Bauer supplied these reels with their T510, 600 & 610 projectors. The reels (800') had the Bauer name on them.

I never knew what the red screw was for!
