Was watching the news this morning and in particular the heatwave and storms hitting the east coast of the US, hope all is well with everyone.

Graham.

The Heat here is pretty bad. Heat Indexes of 100 to 115 Degrees. Went outside yesterday to get the mail and it was hard to breathe. Air Conditioner can make it tolerable indoors but not what I would call chilly or cold. I plan on getting my hair cut off to nearly bald this week. The ones that go out in this heat to bake at the Beach are insane. This is the time to stay indoors for sure! With this Heat, I doubt many will be barbecuing this upcoming 4th of July holiday.

Hope you're keeping your Mum cool Joe withplenty of liquids.
Hope it subsides soon, what with fires in Colorado, heatwaves
in Washington and storms in Virginia,I certainly can't recall
ordreing that little lot.Seriously my concerns for the innocent
folk caught up in these catastrophies, it sounds and looks like
hell on earth. Why oh why will electricity companies not put
cables in the ground, you wouldn't have gas pipes above ground
or the sewer pipes likewise, just put it down to laziness and the
quick profit.I made them bury it on my property, because I was
sick of their bloody electricity poles.

I am trying to keep Mom cool but even with the air conditioning she feels it. And that is always a concern with her bronchitis and high blood pressure. There are some power cables underground here in the city but of course there could be more. This Heat is breaking records and is here very early in the summer. And its Hurricane season till the fall. Just doing laundry or cooking makes the kitchen warm! I am thinking about putting up a window air conditioner that we have packed away to supplement the central air conditioning...

Here in northern Ohio we are going through a period of severe drought and I always get worried around the 4th of July (USA B-day) with people lighting off fireworks. The grass is so brown and brittle it easily catches fire. [Frown]

Bill [Frown]

We have had temps in the 90's the past few weeks and heat indexes in the 100's...very humid....it sucks!

Joe,here is an idea,if your Mum is bedridden, try placing plastic
bootles of water in the bed with her that have been in the fridge
that will help to keep her temperature down,as I understand it
can be very warm at night out there, even a window open at either end of the house or apartment to cause a "through draught"will
give a bit of air movement.A barely warm shower can give some
respite before bedtime.

Thanks for asking, Graham.
I am living in SW DC myself; yes the heat has been up to Middle-Eastern levels for a couple of days and the storm, from my 9th floor apartment, was something to behold. I did an audio recording, using my Zoom handheld, to try to capture the ferocity of it.

Fortunately, both I and my 84-year-old mother who lives in NW have kept the fans running...something like 170,000 are still waiting for power so I consider us lucky and I hope someone is banging away at Pepco (our utility) to get this done so people won't have a 4th with a warm fridge and no A/C.

Claus.

Going by what it was saying on the News this side, that these are
record temperatures since the 1930s,our thoughts are certainly
with you folks,as it can't be very pleasant.Keep an eye on your
Mum Claus, elderly people like to give the impression that things
are okay, but it's as well to be vigilant. How long does the drought
season last out there Bill?

Posted by Bill Phelps (Member # 1431) on July 01, 2012, 05:47 PM:

Well normally we really don't have a drought season...but we had an unusally warm winter and we have not had very much rain and with it being so hot it is just drying everything up. On my way home from work a few days ago the side of the road was on fire...probably from a cigarette butt...the fire dept was on it but I worry about all the fireworks soon...it looks like its going to rain now...I hope it does!

I live in RI and it sure has been unbearable here. Thankfully my wife and I are retired and don't have to go out much. We have AC and it's keeping us cool. It is starting to ease up today with less humidity. Thanks for your concern.

I'll hazard a guess Pat,that the ol' projectors aren't getting to much use in that heat, and who could blame you.Might pay to run them just for the fan.

Hugh

Actually because of the AC I have used mine a bit. Big difference from the 16mm I usd to collect. These super 8 machines are cooler running. And they are still hot. But not as much as the 16mm. Still have to enjoy the hobby.

Hi Guys,My thoughts are with you during these heatwaves/drought/fires.
In an earlier life I lived in Australia,so know all about the heat, its so debilitating,AC's find it difficult to cope!!!!

Now my question to you all (just to take your minds off it)

DO HOMO SAPIENS COME FROM THE PLANET EARTH?

The case against this is that we are the only animal on this planet that can't survive its environment without the aid of clothing.

Every other animal on the planet has adapted to its own environmet without the use of clothes.

Where on this planet is the perfect climate for us?

It has to be somewhere!!!

Oh and another one while I'm at it.

CLIMATE CHANGE IS MAN MADE

If the above statement is true...during the ice age,WHO STARTED THE FIRE!!!

Answers on the back of a postage stamp please!!!

Try keeping cool out there!!!

Tommy

Here's one for the lads to ponder Tom,who discovered you could
get milk from a cow,and what the hell was in his head at the time.
Hpoe things are getting cooler.

If you want to cool down come to Seattle. We've been lucky if it hits 70F. It's been cool and rainy all through June. We call it the June Gloom.

If you think you have it bad come to the desert in Arizona. We have record highs here not for days but for weeks! I'm talking 114-120!

Plus it never cools off here in the summer months even at night and if you go out at midnight it's still 100 degrees! This is what we get for living in the desert, but our winters are really mild which makes up for it. October is still hot in the 90's & November one year the whole month was in the 90's. So it really does not cool off here until December and goes on until just March and then April on is hot for us so we have a very long summer here! We do not have the high humidity (until august) like you do back east and mixed with high temps with the humidity it's got to be very unbearable for you and I surely feel for you.
I would rather live in Washington State where Bryan lives or Oregon where they have much cooler temps.
Well anyway I don't mean to complain because it does not do any good but try and stay cool everybody out there! [Cool]

Guys
All this talk of sustained sunshine can be quite depressing to us Brits,I have literally been watching the grass grow on a daily basis, unable to get the mower out due to rain!!!
Consider living in a country where after 7 days at 70 F,we are in a heatwave, a drought, we have a hosepipe ban, then stand pipes are installed, the army are put on standby,YES this is modern Britain!!!!

What makes matters worse is this 100 degree weather, and the power being out! 100 degree weather is do-able with a nice air conditioner, but sheer hell without it.

Our hearts go out to those suffering under this.

OSI and Fam!

The electrical power transmission grid in the USA can best be described as a joke. Nearly the whole country relies on wires strung from wooden or concrete poles to each individual home. In other words the whole damn system is no better than a string of lights thrown on a Christmas tree! It really is a national disgrace, but you can thank the power companies for that, as their only interest is in gouging the public with astronomical electric rates and they have no interest at all in upgrading to underground wiring. So, the supposedly wealthiest country in the World, has a third world power system! For someone who has lived in the UK, where there is nary a power pole in sight, and consequently UK neighborhoods look neat and uncluttered, it is dismaying to see the jumble of utility wires strung all around US homes. Here in Florida, hurricanes are a fact of life. You would think that the power companies would be forced to bury their lines here, but the power companies have powerful lobyists who make sure this never happens. So the public suffers through multiple outages every time there is a summer afternoon thunderstorm.
Nationalisation is a dirty word in the USA. But when you see the comparison between the neat and efficeient UK nationalized grid system and the really primitive US private electrical system, you cannot argue which is the better. (Same for the train system!).

Paul, here in the Northwest we get storms with Hurricane force winds during the winter. Couple that with 150 foot tall trees and you get a lot of power outages. There is a push to move everything underground but that only happens if there is a major road project. The other solution is aggressive tree trimming by the power company. The tree trimming seems to be working, we have had very little power loss over the last several years. At least when you loose power during the winter you can wear a heavy jacket. I can only imagine how miserable those people are in the heat. The air conditioned theaters must be doing great if they have power.

Roger, I've worked on some projects in the Phoinix, AZ area in August and it was miserable. All you want to do is sit in an air conditioned room. Even the pool at the hotel was too hot to cool off in. I remember it was 95 degrees before the sun came up in the morning.

Yeah Paul I totally agree with you the Power Companies are just soaking us! I was not aware of this but my power company is charging me & everyone a fee rental for the power line that comes off the pole to the house. I wanted to buy the line outright but they said I can't own it and they have to charge me a rental fee! How craze is that? [Mad]

Byran August is the worst time to come to phoenix for the heat and the pool water temp in august at our pool reaches 95 degrees so it's hard to cool off!
I don't think there is anywhere that you can live in the states that has perfect weather all year round? Each state has it's own drawbacks.

Paul I used to live in that well organised country you speak of,
that is before the money mad bastards in Parliament, starting
with the "Iron Lady",started the ball rolling by selling off all our
utilities to anyone that wanted to buy them, our beautiful country
is now being covered in those ghastly bloody wind turbines that
actually generate **** all, as regards power, but our ministers have
shares in the Spanish company that own the ******* things!
Everything in this country that generated wealth has been sold off, which is why everything is taxed to death, and our economy
is knackered.Anyway so much for my rant.
I heard on the News that 17 people have lost their lives in this
freak weather,I pray to God there's no more.I realise when it
comes to heatwaves, you people certainly suffer,a bit of sun
is lovely and in moderation is good for you,but to be hammered
for weeks must take it out of you. It's the elderly that I feel
sorry for, especially if they live alone. As Tommy mentioned
before about our weather,I wish it could come your way to cool
things down a bit.

Roger-- Strange you couldn't buy the lines to your home. I had the power company to put the meter on the power pole and I ran my own lines underground @ 150 ft. to the house. Looks a lot better too. Funny as ***** when the meter maid can't find the power meter [Big Grin]

Bruce,
This was years ago I inquired about this so they may have changed their policy by now?

grass,I am sick of green.I do hope there haven't been anymore
tragedies out there,is the heat disipating? Are those storms gone?
