My grandson made me sit through 4 hours of Lord of the Rings a couple of nights ago. I thought the movie was a bore (of course I did not tell him that, as he is an enthusiast of the series). The story line was confusing, the CGI was way overdone, and the violence was excessive. How it rates an 8.8 on the IMdb is beyond me, I would give it a 3! But, the one great thing about the film was the many stunning shots of New Zealand. How lucky are our NZ friends, here on the forum, to live in such a glorious and peaceful country.

Not a fan if these overlong epics. However, I dare not say this in public in case I have my NZ Passport revoked! I love Jackson's older films, including "The Frighteners" and "Heavenly Creatures". Looking at later productions, I thought his "King Kong" was about an hour too long.
Peter Jackson is one of NZs greatest assets and his movies have done wonders for tourism there.

Like yourself I am not much of a fan of those films. The NFU "National Film Unit" made some really good stuff over the years, even train films like "A Train for Christmas" on 16mm 25min and a "Ride of the 480" a Derann Super8 release 400ft reel is pretty good for showing the place of.

If you like the outdoors then there is plenty to do, however like so many other places around the world it does have its share of social problems as well.

So when are you coming out for a holiday? [Smile]

There is a TV series called "NZ from Above" which shows off the shaky isles to great advantage.
Actually,the "from above" series covers the whole world and is great-but it isn't available on dvd it seems.
I've not seen any of the Tolkien tales.I find him very hard to read.......

I have to say that I really do LOVE these films.

We watch the series once a year every year and I think it's one of those type of films that "overdone" cgi has to be there for it to be memorable and eye-catching.

Never been to New Zealand, but would love to go!

Came across this amazing photo that was taken over the top part of the "South Island" we live just there..."Christchurch".. on the East Coast [Cool]

....also shows the lower half of the North Island.

One of the first DVDs I ever bought was called Earthlight, its a great way to view the Earth "NASA" taken from the Space Shuttle. The on screen "menu" can show you the height, speed, other data and what you are passing over.

Its an amazing DVD, with 5:1 music by Ryan Shore well worth getting.

Hi Graham. That dvd was quite popular in the early days of dvd. I remember seeing some of it at a friend's house. If they bring out a high definition release, i'll definitely get it!
