They had a special showing of the classic Western Shane today at The Enzian. It was well attended for a noon showing, and was very well received. I have seen this film countless times, but even so it never fails to pull me in and I always tear up in the final scene. What an absolutely wonderful film, and Alan Ladd was brilliant in it!
The presentation was digital and looked generally excellent on the outdoor scenes, but was a mess for the night scenes. Watching it, I had no doubt whatsoever that I much preferred my Derann Super 8mm print for the night and darkly lit scenes, It seems that even professional digital projection just cannot handle shadow detail anything like film. The Derann S8 print is truly superb in all respects, and even with a few negative scratches, I think it beats out the digital in terms of much better contrast and color saturation and, as I said, in much better dark scene rendition. Is'nt that something, a super 8 print better than current professional digital cinema!
The only criticism of the Derann feature is that they cut out quite a lot from the Independence Day festivities, which IMO carried a lot of information about Starret's love for his wife Marion, and his realization of the attraction between her and Shane. Why on earth did Derann penny pinch this classic film release in this way! [Frown]

Hi Paul

I know how much you love "Shane" as do I - but I certainly did not think the 8mm version was brilliant in terms of quality - very good but not in my opinion as good as some of the other 8mm releases that Derann put out like the Disney's etc. And my copy was Derek's personal one - the first struck of the negative.

Just my opinion though it is a brilliant western - the best ever made I think story, acting and camera work.

I also consider my copy of SHANE superb! I didn't know it is missing scenes. The question of why did they choose this particular version to copy is,well,hmmm.....Derann was adjustent to a film vault or something and well,...one dark and rainy night they snatched a copy, struck their negative and returned it back! Remember, the film was sold as an "import" in the second hand lists, and not as a Derann release. I believe they had some trouble later but,it is all history now and a number of us are lucky owners of this classic film!

Hi Mark,
Good to see you posting again on this forum. Yes I do love this film, and I cannot tell you how proud I am to have a great super 8 print of it. I have the Blu Ray DVD that was released a couple of years ago and it is very good, but I honestly do prefer the quality of the Derann S8 film print - better color, better contrast, and much better shadow detail, it just has that indefinable Technicolor look about it. Sounds very nice Paul.

I think there is a trick there that technicolour on to 8mm or 16mm etc looks fantastic.

Even on the so so current acetate stock the super 8 trailers from Technicolour 35mm possitive trailers are lovely, One Desert something or other I think.

Its a shame that now the kodak poly possitive stock is so brilliant that towards the end of derann the northern labs got rid of the super 8 chap and then it was a lottery who did it and how the later prints looked.

Some runs were fantastic, some very so so.

Also film on 35mm seemed to go towards a very bluey bias.

I imagine running Shane on your GS makes a serious bit of difference Paul. What do you use Panayotis ?

I have to admit I have`nt seen Shane. I will have to give it a go, but on Blu Ray ( sorry ), is that good ?

I wonder what the film goes for now ?

Best Mark.

PS Paul check out these Star Wars steelbooks coming out soonish in case you have any temptation, but I think its just the current versions, should be affordable stateside. Wonder if there is a Shane one.

The star wars ones coming have the poster art on the back and a nice action pic inside.

I`ll just go and look up the Shane Blu Ray. Anyone got a print to sell at an older type price ?

Hi, all

in terms of technicolour I had a copy of a 16mm "kodachrome" print of "White Christmas"...the colour was stunning..unbelievable...I never saw anything in my collection before or after like that and I had a few IB's I never did get a copy of "Shane" on 16mm worse-luck... It certainly is my favourite western! Followed closely by the "Shootist"...and that film I only was able to get semi-faded Eastman prints. [Smile]

I think I remember reading in a review of the Shane print that there was some negative damage to the print that Derann had to slightly edit. The Sinbad print had the same problem which is why it was deleted after first print run.
