I received a very kind invite to the Blackpool Film Fair last night From the organizer Mr Guest.

I have to say from what's been hinted by David, this year's event sounds out of this world!

Some superb stuff lined up here for this one from the sounds of things.

I know David wants to announce the details himself nearer the time, but this year's event should be the best yet since the demise of Derann from what I can make out.

I do hope and expect a fabulous turn out for this one this year and by the sounds of things, take plenty of plastic for what's on offer (or cash if you prefer old school ways of working ha ha)!

We do have to congratulate David and the organizers of the BFCC, John Clancy and Keith Wilton for still keeping these events both alive and exciting in 2015 it has to said.
Admirable work indeed!

I was really looking forward to attending the Harpenden 9.5 meet on 18th October but it looks like other commitments will put paid to that. Then I thought about the BFCC at Ealing but there is no date advertised for October. Is there going to be one this year? Failing that Blackpool has to be a consideration.

It has to be Terry based on what is being spoken of!

I can add that bookings for the Saturday night dinner are the highest I have known this far in advance, so I'm confident that we will see the biggest dinner attendance since the Derann days. Don't forget that there will be some special enhancements and surprises as we celebrate 30 years of the Blackpool dinner - with the 30th dinner!

Incidentally, a gentleman I'm aware of in the London area, who would have difficulty attending by public transport, would be delighted to join someone travelling by car (and I'm sure would contribute to the petrol costs). If you're driving from - or passing somewhere near - west London and could possibly assist, please contact me and I'll tell you more.

David
What is the date of the Blackpool event?

Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on October 06, 2015, 03:21 AM:

That is amazing news Adrian!!!
And as predicted, no doubt, the best all round event since the closure of Derann!

Well done to you all, just fantastic!! [Smile]

I do hope someone can assist the chap in London. No one should miss out on this one if they both wish to attend, and are able to make it.

You'd like to think we have both a large enough and charitable enough community on here to easily make this happen for this gent.

Well David we are not mind readers! There has been lots of hype on this subject, but not one mention of the date?
It's looking to be a great event and I hope to make a weekend of it. The last time I attended Derann were there and still in business.

The date is here now so that's the main thing.
So in all...

Events From Friday 20th Nov thru' to Sunday 22nd November for the film fair.

I shall list it in the "events" section elsewhere this evening for you David.

The date has been in the "Upcoming Conventions" thread on the main 8mm part of the forum for many months though. That's where I always check.

Well good for you Brian. But when I see a topic titled 'This years Blackpool Film Fair' I, like most other people, expect to see Time - Date - Place advertised. That is the way to get maximum response/attendance. Little wonder that David received many emails and phone calls asking the question, don't you think? If these events are to survive and prosper the organisers need to sing these basics from the rafters. There are few enough of us dedicated followers as it is so encouragement is key to success.

Paul said "I have never known anyone attend this event and not go home HAPPY" and I can certainly endorse this as I went home (to South London) happy in 1984 and have never missed one since! It combines the pleasure of a short holiday amongst like-minded friends with a film convention, so if you like watching and collecting films, what more can you ask! And considering that you generally pick up some amazing bargains for crazy prices, I'm not wealthy enough to be able to afford to miss it!

We are oh so fortunate to have David Guest organising this fabulous event each year now and being a showman who better. David gives it 100% which assures all visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a very special weekend which just keeps getting better and better.

The Blackpool event has always been a special event in the UK film collectors diary not least as it takes place at the noted number 1 coastal resort. The Hilton is quite an amazing venue and David secures a good portion of it for his movie event.

Sincere thanks to you David for all your really tremendous efforts and flying the REEL FILM flag, yes this is what its all about.

I'm pleased to say that I already have 53 bookings for the 2015 Blackpool Dinner, which means it will be the best-attended since the Derann era. With it being a special celebratory occasion - with some surpises that I'm confident will prove very popular - plus of course the fantastic events in store on the Friday and Sunday, if you've been hesitant to return to Blackpool in recent years, surely THIS must be the year that you can't afford to miss!!!

Please note that it would be appreciated if any remaining dinner bookings could reach me by Wednesday 11 November if possible.

indulgence. a great word to use Simon for this event.i know all who are going are in for a treat. every year i see many coming away with film bargains.this event is also a great boost for the hobby.so should be supported by as many collectors as possible who can make the day/weekend. its no good, in the future moaning about how things used to be.when possibly events like this may no longer exist. a lot of hard work and organisation goes into these events. so its down to collectors to support the people and dealers who do the likes of the blackpool film fair, and make it all happen.

Just a note to say that if you're attending the dinner, don't worry because I haven't sent the information sheet just yet. I've been trying to pin down the Hilton on the exact room(s) we are in but I haven't had confirmation yet. If they can't tell me by tomorrow, I'll send it without this information. It's not a cause for concern as the hotel reception can tell people on the day if needed. It's very likely that it will be in the same function room area as the last two dinners.

Why is the auction in the dealers room and not in the cinema.

Posted by Brian Fretwell (Member # 4302) on November 16, 2015, 05:45 AM:

I imagine that, as last year, it is for capacity and ease of set up - not having to move stock into the cinema which may be quite a way from the main hall. Also it means it is not taking customers as far away from the dealers tables.

Posted by David Guest (Member # 2791) on November 16, 2015, 06:55 AM:

hi peter if you will move it all into the cinema room when its been booked in the convention room we will have it in there are you fit enough to carry over 300 films .there will be seats this year for the auction

Always been a good idea of yours David and good that visitors can continue to quietly browse and not miss the auction either. [Smile]

No but derann used to use a small trolley and they had more than 300 films.

Posted by David Guest (Member # 2791) on November 16, 2015, 10:05 AM:

I am a one band show with only a few dedicated volunteers .I estimate going of last year when auction ran over 2 hours there will be more that 300 plus films ,I look forward to seeing you on sunday maybe you can there for 5.30 am to give me a lift to set up .and when derann ran its was only a small hotel and all the rooms could all the link up .this Hilton hotel 5 star with rooms all over the place in fact one room in the Hilton is bigger than all the rooms in the savoy put together see you sunday 5.30 am

Posted by Paul Barker (Member # 4318) on November 16, 2015, 01:47 PM:

David. i sometimes think that a small number of collectors do not see what goes into the organisation of the likes of the blackpool film fair. its a lot of planning and hard work. when Derann did this event they had quite a lot of paid staff and as David Guest has pointed out this event is only made possible by the time he gives himself, and by a small number of volunteers who also give their time to make it what it is. so it would be nice if just a little more thought was given about what has to be done to make it all happen.i am sure it would be appreciated if Peter Scott is willing to give his time by transporting films from one area of the hotel to another to what he considers an improvement to the auction. going by last years event an even better time lies ahead for all those who are making the effort to attend this year. as long as you the collector supports it, i see it going from strength to strength. have a great time everyone... see you all there.

Seems like you cant ask a question on here now without getting sarcastic reply.

Posted by Paul Barker (Member # 4318) on November 17, 2015, 03:18 AM:

Peter. no sarcasm was meant, and im sorry if you have taken it that way. its not just a case of hireing a room and setting up a few tables.everyone involved in the blackpool film fair is kept very busy. especially on the sunday itself. it is done to the best it can be. it was a bigger success than ever last year being held at the Hilton hotel. and a great time was had by all who attend. and this year will be the best yet.

Posted by Del Phillipson (Member # 513) on November 17, 2015, 10:52 AM:

I must admit, it was a stroke of genius by David to move the film fair to the Hilton, my wife and I have stayed at the Hilton many times in the last 15 years and find it a top hotel. I don't think a better hotel in Blackpool could have been found, well done David, see you all on Sunday.

Posted by David Guest (Member # 2791) on November 17, 2015, 11:17 AM:

no sarcasm but you followed up with a reply
derann used to use a small trolley and they had more than 300 films.
one of the reasons the auction is held in the dealers room as its very time consuming transporting films from one room to another with only a handful of dedicated members who on sunday will be showing films and doing the very busy bring and buy and another reason is to give the dealers a chance to bid I hope this answers your question fully see you sunday thanks

The Radio Times shows that we share Blackpool with Strictly Come Dancing again this year, despite the change of date.

Watch out for outside broadcast vans around the Tower Ballroom!!

Well I've got everything ready for the convention dinner, tombola, raffle prizes, posters and other things which I won't mention just yet, Adrian has one or two surprises as well along with his great film quiz during the meal. It's going to be a great night, REMEMBER, if you are not going to the dinner but will be in Blackpool on Saturday night you are welcome to come to the dining room at the Hilton at about 9pm and buy an entertainment ticket, this gives you access to the room after the actual dinner you can buy tickets for the raffle, £1 a ticket (valuable prizes to be won),and sit down and watch the film show, we also have a bar so you can get refreshments, you will be most welcome so give it a try. entertainment tickets available at the Friday night film show being held at the Hilton Hotel at 8.30pm.onwards see Adrian Winchester also on the Saturday night, just turn up after the dinner about 9pm.entertainment tickets cost just £3.00. The Sunday Convention itself is going to be the best one for many many years loads of dealers and some surprises you can't miss it! all thanks to David Guest and his small team who have really got the convention buzzing again.See you there

Following on from David's message, I'll add that I'd suggest anyone dropping in for the Saturday night post-dinner entertainment arrives in the period 9.30 to 9.40pm, as 9pm would be rather early.

I've been advised that someone has sadly has had to pull out of the dinner, so I can accommodate one (or possibly two) last minute bookings. So if you would like to come please catch me at the Friday evening show or try the function room we are in on Saturday, from 4pm.

Hi all,

Have a great time this weekend - I will I could be there - but as a teacher living in South Wales - I really wouldn't be able to get to Blackpool until sometime on Saturday then leaving before the afternoon - as I will be in work Monday morning - the real shame for me is that I don't believe this hobby really took hold in South Wales and if it did - I believe there are very few collectors left. So as a result the only events available to me are Blackpool , Ealing and Cleethorpes . Would be great if something could happen in Cardiff - but I doubt that would ever happen.

David

P.S - Mr Guest - if you have any super 8 left after Sunday - shorts , features etc - please send me a private message with a list

well what can you say about this film fair. i have just returned from blackpool. i can honestly say this really was the best yet. it all started friday evening with the showing of goldfinger on 16mm. the weather outside was very very windy, but inside a great time was had by all .a great night and some unexpected laughs to help the night along. great fun indeed. saturday and the evening meal was fabulous. the organisation was faultless. Adian Winchester as compare and the work done by both Adrian and David Watson is tremendous. some excellent prizes were won in the raffle inc a super 8mm feature of THATS DANCING which was won by PROJECTIONS magazine editor Pete Travers. many other superb items were kindly donated as prizes. the after dinner film show supplied by David Guest was a real treat. a mind blowing collection of shorts and rare trailers in 16mm .inc a stunning trailer of CASINO ROYALE with Daniel Craig. we were then treated to the lovely b/W british comedy A HOME OF YOUR OWN. all superbly projected by Mark Norton and Simon McConway. the night was a huge success. and lovely to see Keith Wilton attending too. the sunday the main dealers were up and ready for the opening at 10am. a fabulous turnout and as usual some fantastic bargains to be had eg. Eumic super 8mm sound projectors at £25. super 8mm sound 2 reelers 5 for £20 with such titles as 42nd street. golddiggers 1933 and footlight parade all in original cases. 16mm projectors £30. 16mm shorts from just £1. i could go on and on. those who did not go missed an absolute corker. believe me . the auction also had some really excellent buys and fabulous bargains. also attending this year was Bill Parsons.of course many many other familiar faces were to be seen.brilliant films shows also given during the day by Don Sykes and Bob Nicholls. so once again another huge success of this highly respected film fair brought to us once again by Mr David Guest. i thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. it was lovely seeing everyone having such a good time. so heres to next year. and it would be so nice to hear no lame excuses like i have to work. the dates of these events are given months in advance. we are all allowed time off. holidays etc. so make it a priority next year. its your loss after all by not attending. thank you to everyone who i spoke to over the weekend you made it what it is. thank you.

Hi all,

Glad you had a good time - but Mr Barker - having to work is not a lame excuse and as a teacher who finishes at 3.25pm and then starts his work day at 8.45am - I would only have been able to arrive on the Saturday and leave by lunch time on the Sunday - as Blackpool to South Wales is a considerable drive. Not everyone lives in Lancashire.

in reply to David Skillern. i know umpteen collectors who travel a great distance to attend these event.and not just the blackpool event. this year again some had traveled to blackpool from other countries as they do to ealing etc. i too have travelled to ealing. Deranns open days in birmingham etc.if you really want to do it you do it regardless. i worked in a school for over 30 years. on the seldom times i wanted time off i used to ask the head teacher or school governors.it was never a problem. no one is indispensable.

well I am back home now after a hectic weekend being there from Friday to do the show on Friday night .I have had some wonderful comments re my northwest film fair .I would like to thank every one for attending especially those from other countries and those who drove the 8 hour drive .
I would personally like to thanks adrain for letting me do the Saturday night show showing my collection of films and having my accordion dance organ playing at the interval .I won again 3 times in the raffle and the prizes were great .
but one last thing with out paul barker doing the bring and buy for me .and simon and mark for helping me carry all my stuff in and seting out the hall .don and bob for doing a first class film show presentation of films ,Adrian for organising the sat evening meal and last but not least lee Mannering for doing me the northwest advert banner as used on ebay and my first time to meet mr kieth wilton who I found he was nice to talk to and plenty of knowledge and his help also setting up my room .with out these very dedicated helpers this event would not happen .a good turn out from dealers but I would have liked to have seen more collectors supporting my event .room is booked for same weekend as this next year 2016 thanks to every one best wishes david

I would like to thank David Skillern first of all for the excellent write up there on this year's Blackpool event.
Fabulous to hear people like Keith and Bill attended this year's event!

I know people believe that for all workers you can get time off if you want it and they therefore see it as any mention of the word work, then you are making lame excuses.
For firemen, Police, Nurses etc, they have worked annualized hours for years. For myself, it's something that was forced upon us all around 3 years ago now.
Believe me, it is a totally draconian system to have to work by. No holidays except the ones you generate for yourself by working on top of what is already a 50 hour
Working week each time I'm in.

I am not bleating as I am reasonably well paid for what I do but what I will say is that unless you have had to work in these modern day systems of working, most people cannot begin to believe what sacrifices have to made just to stay employed.

It is very much a case of "your life in their hands" nowadays for anyone working these patterns. When you're in, you're in...no excuses. That is,if you want to remain in work.

Dear all,

I don't want to seem like a killjoy - I love this hobby and it's great that people like David Guest and Keith Wilton organise events that collectors and interested parties can attend - but negative comments from individuals like Mr Barker sour the enjoyment. Mr Barker - it obviously was some 30 years ago when you worked in a school environment - the work ethos has changed considerably since you worked in a school . So I'd appreciate if you have these kind of comments - keep them to yourself as this is a friendly and informative site - so negative comments aren't required .

David

Very well said David. The working patterns of today are completely unrecognizable by past ways of working.

As I say, for many including myself, when I'm rostered in, I have to be in. It's as simple as that. No excuses and no sick days unless hospitalized.

I've not been off sick for over a decade now. I simply can't afford to be off if I wish to stay with my company.

as stated previously. if you really want to . you do it. and it is only 2 years ago since i worked in a school. i know exactly the daily working in a school. as i am still involved in other ways. i think if you really look hard you will see were the negativity really is. and its certainly not coming from me. regards

there is only one thing puzzles me Andrew is that you are constantly posting on the 8mm forum and reel magic 24/7 and do post some interesting questions and replies to forum members .how can you do this if you are always in full time work confused

Mr Barker,
I see you deleted your previous post - in terms of negativity - I'm afraid that previous post was petty and negative. I have been an avid film collector since I was 13 yrs and I'm now 49. Please refrain from criticising members of this forum - if you can get to these events all well and good - but negative comments are not needed. If I had gone to Blackpool - I would have had to leave before the main dealers event - which is primarily what I would have gone for - as I would have been looking for super 8 features. I say this with no malice - this is a fun and informative site - please let's keep it that way.

Firstly, thanks to David for another superb weekend. It literally cannot be improved on. He is to be congratulated for breathing new life into this celebrated convention.

I must come in on the school teacher aspect being discussed here. I was a teacher and headteacher for many years, so I fully realise the strains of the profession. This never stopped me from attending Blackpool. And my experience in school is very recent.

My shift pattern David gives me 6 days off when not on shift. I say 6 days but it isn't really as you finish on a night shift so your first day off is wasted by sleeping all day recovering from 12.5 hours of rushing about from one machine breakdown to another.

These are your rest days, weekends and holidays all rolled into one. They occur to a set pattern as outlined by your employer. No flexibility is given.

I post on my breaks in work, I post when I'm off for the things that interest me. I do get a lot of time off, just not necessarily the time I'd like.
For example who would take Jan 4th to Jan 10th off on holiday by their own choice?

Certainly never me in the days I got to choose my own holidays, that's for sure.

well MR Skillern. i too have been collecting film since i was 9 years old. i am now 64.if you attend or anyone else attends a film fair its up to them. their choice. but i must admit i find it hard to read posts from so called die hard collectors going on about how much we should try and give support and keep this hobby going. yet when a film fair be it blackpool or any other comes up they always have a reason that they cannot go. now yes i know there must be genuine reasons sometimes. but please come on give us a break. there were a couple of people at this years blackpool with zimmer frames to help them get round the room. and yet here we have events advertised well in advance but the time comes and oh i cant go im working. i really do find that really hard to take.real die hard collectors will go to great lengths to go. but hey at the end of the day its their loss. but then they want pictures posted to look at and still we are told lets give all our support to the hobby. but as i posted earlier a great time was had yet again by all those who were at this years blackpool.and without the likes of mr David Guest this is one convention that would have bitten the dust a few years back. then we would all be looking back saying its a shame that isnt it. i wonder why it finished.

a further thing i would like to add as i forgot to say in previous posts. the Hilton hotel is the best hotel the blackpool film fair has ever been held in. it offers excellent accomodation. superb food and plenty of it. and the staff and service are really excellent. i am sure that those that have already stayed at this hotel will agree.it is a great great venue and im sure it could not be bettered. i for one will book here again for my wife and myself as soon as i can for next years film fair.which i hope can be another 3 day event.

And yes, I am looking forward to seeing some pics.

Well my son and I enjoyed our time at Blackpool, A 420 mile round trip and in there for an hour and a half but got some great films so well worth it, we're planning to stay over next year which will be much better, well done to all who were involved in putting this event on.

Another post in praise of the event (I haven't download pictures from my camera to post yet).

Good to see Keith Wilton there, especially as the nearest tram stop to the Hilton is "Wilton Parade", expect some coverage in Film Collector.

Good film show Friday (I had plans for Saturday - not Strictly Come Dancing!!!!! so didn't attend the meal) and great dealers/shows/auction Sunday.

The only negative comment goes to the railways as my train arrived in Euston over an hour late on the trip nack - I'll be after relay repay from them :-)

Dear all,

I'm really glad those who managed to get to Blackpool had a really great time. But I feel that my earlier posts have been misinterpreted - as a 49 year old with family commitments - some things have to occasionally take a back seat - and a 450 mile round trip with Santa not too far away was not a major priority. As I have said previously I have collected super 8 since I was 13 years old and I have a large collection of features and shorts - but for about 15 years now I have just been collecting features. When the term Die Hard fan/Collector is used - I feel that this means anyone who supports the hobby they are passionate about - and lets remember everyone that this is just what this collecting films and projectors is for most of us - a hobby. I feel if you go to the conventions and buy from dealers or you support people like Classic, Independent 8, Paul Foster, Ian At Perrys - you are supporting the continuation of this great hobby.
So let's be positive about everyone that posts on this site - we all want the same thing - the continuation of this hobby and whether that is through organising events or conventions or buying directly from the dealers - surely that's what we all want and that's what will hopefully continue. [Smile]

I find much of David's circumstances and comments echo my own. I agree 100% with all what was said in David's last post here.

Work commitments does stifle many things for a lot of us, but equally there are many other factors that have to take priority over and above any hobby for many of us who do overall support the venture very well throughout the year.

Equally, I hope for all our American and non UK residing collecting friends on here, Paul's requests are answered in the superb manner we all get a flavour of Cinesea, no matter where we are all based on this earth.

i like many others attended the evening meal on the saturday night. as i have said earlier it was a huge success. on each table David Watson had placed 2 large blue binders which he had put together himself. each containing the full history of 30 years of the blackpool convention dinners. starting at the cliffs hotel in 1985 to present day at the hilton hotel. containing a synopsis on each year. with photographs, adverts, menus etc etc. it was suggested that each table put their own table place setting into a bag and make a draw. the first two out of the bag getting to keep the binder. i was happy to say i was a winner along with Keith Wilton.having now had time to read it thoroughly i can say it is superb. looking back over those years was a joy. even bringing a tear to my eye.so thankyou David Watson for putting so much time and effort into what is now to me a treasured item.

Well it's a whole week already since the Blackpool Convention dinner, last Saturday afternoon saw myself and Adrian Winchester along with some help from Simon Mcconway,Mark Norton and Mr.super 8 himself Keith Wilton in the dining room for about three hours getting the place ready and decorated with balloons etc.and putting out the raffle prizes all in preparation for the night. The dinner turned out to be a great success, starting around 7.30pm with diners arriving and having a pre dinner drink from our private bar and buying lots of tickets for the raffle, we sold a little over 400 tickets. After diners,56 of them had taken their seats Adrian welcomed everyone to the 30th Convention Dinner, then promptly gave out the nights first prize, diners were asked to look under their coffee cup and saucer for a sticker, the lucky finder Robert Stoner was asked to come to the front and was presented with a congratulations card
inside of which was a full refund of the cost of his convention meal.. Then the meal got underway here's what we had.
Starter..
Vegetable soup with herb dumplings.
Main course..
Fillet of lamb, with chorizo sausage fritters, fondant potatoes, vichy carrots, sesame green beans, roasted parsnips all served with a madeira jus.
Dessert..
Tiramisu Torte served with amaretto jelly and rum spiced chocolate.
Followed by..
Coffee and after dinner mints and a nice slice of our 30th Dinner Anniversary cake.
between the dinner courses Adrian held the now famous film quiz, 15 brain teasers to stretch the diners film knowledge the winner who scored 14 out of 15 was Eddie Goodwin who had also won last years quiz,Adrian presented Eddie with his prize, chocolates and a bottle of wine and a round of applause from the rest of the diners. During the dinner Adrian proposed a toast to the memory of the late Derek Simmonds, much missed proprietor of DERANN FILMS and the man who first started the convention dinners 30 years ago in 1985. We also had a second toast this time to the health of Ged Jones long time Derann film staff member and Derek Simmonds right hand man, Ged was responsible for many years in compiling the covention dinner film quiz and later also helping with the dinner bookings etc. Ged has been rather ill lately and is spending a considerable length of time in hospital, a get well soon card was passed around all the diners to sign and will be sent to Ged in hospital asap.
The meal over we commenced the raffle, this being the 30th dinner we had 30 raffle prizes up for grabs, prizes such as
the full length super 8 feature of 'That's Dancing', a 16mm
Disney cartoon 'Morris the Midget Moose',with the recent release of the new bond film 'Spectre' there was several bond related prizes,a large picture frame with lots of photographs from passed 007 movies,a 'Doctor No' collectors plate, bond film books,on super 8 'The Living Daylights' the
pre title sequence with bond fighting on a speeding land rover on the rock of Gibraltor and some other bond prizes.
We also had some super 8 cartoons and trailers, DVD and CD box sets, bottles of wine ,chocolates and a Blackpool gift clock amongst other items, There was great excitement as the tickets were drawn from the tombola and lots of laughs.
So onto the finale of the night, the film show, this year
presented on 16mm by Sunday film convention orginizer David
Guest and ably projected by Mark Norton using an Elf xenon
projector. The first half of the show consisted of cartoons
adverts trailers and snippets of daring film stunts from loads of different films. After the intermission a B/w 16mm print of a British comedy film made in the early 1960's
called 'Home of your Own'showing incompetent work men trying to build a house, featuring many well known British film and television actors,it was a very funny film and had the diners laughing out loud.
With the end of the film it was the end of a great night the diners giving a loud round of applause in appreciation
they left close to 1.00am saying how much they had enjoyed the evening and expressing hopes to be there next year,
WILL YOU be ? do try, I promise you, you will love it.

What an absolutely awesome event! Here in the US, we are all in total envy of such a luxurious convention.
