I have just ordered a new book which looks very exciting to those who are interested in the mechanics of the film industry.
"How Films Were Made & Shown" by David Cleveland and Brian Pritchard is A4 size with 453 pages and well over 600 black & white illustrations and 363 in colour.
The book details the developments of motion picture technology from a British perspective from 1895 to 2015. It is priced @ £45 including UK postage.
The link to the website also indicates details for foreign postage.

I love Kevin Brownlow's comment.

My delivery is being done by Royal Mail Parcel Force (the big red van), not the usual letter post by a walker with a shoulder bag.

Just read the link and this looks great.
My order has just been sent and can`t wait to get my hands on this publication.
Thanks for the heads-up Maurice!
Happy New Year To All.
David

Maurice, you are going to be delighted with that book. I've had my copy for a few weeks now, and it is an absolute gem, filled with technical knowledge that's not to be found anywhere else. Superbly illustrated too. It's helped by the fact that David Cleveland was both a projectionist, a filmmaker and a historian, so has a foot in each camp. Probably the best technical film book I've ever come across.

He goes round giving shows with Nigel Lister, using a restored 1912 Gaumont Chrono 35mm projector.

Indeed, I am delighted. It would have been worth it just for all the splendid photographs, most of which are in colour. It was a nice surprise to find it was a hard-back. I hate large books which are soft-back, once read, the covers never lie flat.

I can thoroughly recommend this book to all Forum members, all formats are covered, so there's something for everybody.

Get your copy before they sell out. They will be worth a lot on the second-hand market in a few years time.

A brilliant volume with something to learn for everyone.
Feels like you should be wearing white gloves to turn the pages to savour the contents.
I agree, you will regret it, if you let this volume pass you bye!

I would enjoy having Kevin Brownlow speak at one of our CINESEA gatherings in Wildwood NJ - Ah, to dream - The Parade's Gone By, one of my top favorites - Cheers, Shorty

I received my copy this week. One of the best books I have ever seen about the history of the cinema and very detailed. Covers just about every topic you can think of. Well worth the cost. Ken Finch.
