The British Film Institute have been doing this for donkeys years.
There are now many examples available on DVD and Bluray. There is also The Projected Picture Trust, dedicated to the preservation and restoration of projection equipment, as well as The Cinema Theatre Association who try to prevent the wanton destruction of cinema and theatre buildings of note. ken Finch. American Film Insttitute, Museum of Modern Art, The BFI National Film Archive, Cinematheque Francais and many others. Almost every film producing country in the world have preservationists. Many archives go back before 1939 and they will always needed.
