Just having watched Peter Sellers play many characters in the 1951 film "Let's Go Crazy" I read up on the Internet Movie Data Base and found one American reviewer who referred to one of the characters as milquetoast.

Having no idea of what the word meant Google gave me the answer as a person who was timid and meek. It derived from a 1924 U.S. comic strip.

Does anybody in America use this word in their daily vocabulary?

It is part of our vocabulary, although maybe not daily.

When it comes to insulting words, there are usually so many alternatives!

Thank you, Steve, is it meant to be insulting?

Consider the synonyms:

Wimp
Wuss
Nebbish
Namby-Pamby
Milksop
Cream puff

-none have appeared on any résumé I've ever read!

Of course it's an idea that's gotten a lot of people killed (Note 1):

"I don't think we should do that."
"C'mon, don't be such a milquetoast!"

-30 minutes later, the ambulances arrived!

What do you chisel in the first guy's tombstone?

"I TOLD you!"

What do you chisel in the second guy's?

"Yeah,...well, you listened to me! I'm just an idiot, you are an idiot's lackey!"

Notes:

(1) -usually guys...most of the time women seem to be a little bit wiser in these situations!

This reminds of thosde great T-shirts from the 80's that say on them "I'm With Stupid" with a finger pointing to whoever is standing next to the person wearing the T-shirt.

Of course, there was one of those that said the same thing, and had the finger pointing straight up! [Smile]

It's something like this:

F-16 Thunderbird Flight

-idiot that I am, I'd do it too!
