can anyone on here explain,in layman's terms, ebay fees?
I cant help feel that no matter how hard i try to understand them i feel like i am being ripped off by them. [Confused]

Tom...Ebay Fees are basically 10% of the combined final value and shipping. The percentage varies depending on certain categories. I use this Ebay calculator to estimate fees:

https://www.fees.ebay.com/feeweb/feecalculator

Also PayPal charges additional fees, which you can estimate using this calculator:

Tom, your question, intended for eBay sellers gives me an opportunity to include a suggestion. For buyers like myself ( A Canadian ), sellers offering the global shipping program does benefit the buyer in Canada, as the parcel arrives free of charge . This may incur a further percentage for the seller, but I am not certain. I am personally more apt to bid on an item offering this service. From the UK, UPS has been the best for me, although I do pay a modest import fee. USPS used by Our American friends is also a good method. I will pay the import fee unless the item is marked "gift" or less than $100. ..Any way you slice it, someone pays a fee... [Smile]

Why not advertise on this Forum and save the fees charged by eBay?

Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on September 12, 2017, 03:50 AM:

The thing is, as any e bay seller would admit to, they hope even the extortionate fees and PayPal commission charges will be offset by a high price gained from a competitive auction site with a far wider audience rather than a set amount from fair firm prices on a commission free forum page etc.

Most of the time, for decent well advertised prints, I'm certain even with the high deductions, most are better off placing them through auction than the majority of exact same titles sold for fixed prices in places like these.

The funny thing is, as is human nature, it still leads to complaints regarding the chunk taken by ebay & co as like most things in life,..we want our cake and eat it. [Wink]

Totally agree with you Andrew. The only thing that doesn't seem to sell that well at the moment is Super 8 projectors.

People must be already happy with what they have Simon.

That is very true Andrew. I've even noticed "higher end" machines such as the Eumig S938 stereo only going for minimum prices of late.

All makes for a happy set of collectors and good for the new comers.

I have too many projectors now and no doubt countless others also have.
Two's company, tens a crowd!

In fact I've just scared myself just realizing what I'm harbouring!!!

1 x Agfa Sonnector LS
1x Bauer T190
1x Elmo ST 1200
1x Eumig S938
1x Fujicascope SH 30
3x Bauer T610
2x Beaulieu 708 el

And a partridge in a pear tree!

Then there are the digital PJ's on top Arghh.. sigh.

No more I cry,..no more!! [Big Grin]

With regard to Simon's comment, it is quite possible that Super 8 collectors all have a decent projector, or in many cases, projectors, and therefore are not considering increasing their collection.

But they are always on the look out for a film which they do not currently have. Few films are appearing as a 'Buy It Now' item, bidders now chase each other in trying to be the ultimate buyer, thus pushing up the price without really knowing what others have bid up to. Anyone in an actual sale room would know exactly how the bidding was going.

Lots of cheap machines about there might well be Simon, but not all are 100% or even 10% functional as can be seen here and from other subsequent searches I made...

From experience and observation. You normally home on the ultimate machine for your exact requirements being professional or semi professional use for the home or for an audience.

Having gone through every gauge of film over the years, Super 8 is defiantly small amature format and nostalgic even today.

I personally deal with major installations on film. Which includes more recently the Duffy archive on The Bowie exhibition.

But a one time a professional gauge I remember you telling me Robert.

It was me who procrastinated it was only ever an intended amateur "home Movie" gauge, I hope you recall? [Wink]

A very good, highly satisfactory and fulfilling one though, nevertheless.

Yes, Andrew I do recall, but your own personal tastes do move on within time. I now rarely play or shoot Super 8 for that matter these days.
But i still have a fondness for the gauge all the same. Just like my long time friend John Clancy does.

I do hope john does decide to visit here soon, tell him please Robert.

Such a shame a man with his historical association with the gauge and overall love for Super 8mm never posts here any longer.

He has a wealth of background and knowledge to share with everyone here.

The same of course can be said for Keith Wilton.

All of that interest, yet part of the overwhelming silent majority???

Go figure [Confused]

Just getting things back on track regarding Tom's Ebay fees query - I rarely ever list on there now they have no upper limits (Ebay UK at least) for their fees regardless of the final sale price.

Yes it is still the place to find the most willing buyers, pitted against each other to the timed end (remember it is a time limited sale NOT a true auction) but if Ebay could just be a little more understanding and not screw sellers who do sell higher priced items then I am sure much better and desirable films and equipment would appear on there again.

Tom - you may have missed the recent Ebay promotion for £1 maximum final value fees which saved me and many others a lot of money.

They have a current £3 maximum fee promotion on as well - so for example if you sold a film for £100 they will only charge you £3 instead of the usual £10 plus PayPal fees on top of course.

Have a look in your Ebay messages as you have to click to accept these types of offers before listing.

Still, E Bay is what it is Kevin, and too many sat at desks types, profit by doing so very little from buyers and sellers alike, just trying to sell or obtain the things they have always seeked.

Cannot stand the place myself nor what it represents, nor how it makes it's money!

A despicable unethical money making modern day racket in my estimations!

100% in agreement with you Andrew it is just the way of the world these days my friend - I have found it very handy for non cine stuff usually purchased on the request (paid for with my PayPal balance!) of my wife and daughters. I went though a period where if you looked at my bought items you would have sworn I was considering cross dressing there were so many ladies clothing items on there (honestly Guv'nor)

The Modern world, I despise with a vengeance Kevin.
Cross dressing is perfectly acceptable behaviour Kevin (well nearly ha ha), ragging someone to pay a third party for doing next to sod all, isn't! [Big Grin] [Wink]

Although eBay charges are controversial, you would pay a lot more at an auction saleroom and most likely not get the coverage/interest from the internet.
What I find detestable is their 10% charge on postage/shipping costs. How do they justify that?

Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on September 13, 2017, 05:55 AM:

They can't Terry, simple as that.
If you ask them to justify this action, they won't be able to.
They don't care however, so long as it makes them even more money!

Yes I too can`t quite get my head around the fee on the actual postage too.

I just wonder what they make globally in a day ?

We had a local Auction house now closed, probably due to ebay etc.

Shame as it really added colour and interest to the town it was in, especially on auction day, lovely old building etc too. Felt like travelling back in time a bit in there.

They also charged 10%, but they had to run the building, pay staff etc etc etc.

Even the staff seeemd to be off another more laid back affable time too.

I was very surprised when I did a chritable amount on ebay that they charged 5% commision on that though, when all they will do is hit a button every 3 months or so.

But they can be helpful if you need them too.

Best Mark.

Except when you ask them to justify their fees.

Regarding the offers they do, max £1 or £3, i do accept these offer's hence my query, my bill still seems too high. Its a waste of time doing live chat unless there is a buyer problem, fortunately only two in nearly 600 transactions isn't too bad.
Will also add, (great comments on here), like many people, a little bit of wanting maximum is in there as Andrew states.
Ebay is a way of us raising good money to buy more titles,
99% of the people who pay the higher sums are not forum members, if they are they must be the silent members as i never reconise any of the names i send to, maybe 3 or 4 in all the years i have been selling. [Wink]

The silent majority lining the pockets of ebay fat cats it is then.

I must admit, to get titles I've wanted, I have begrudgingly done the same myself a fair few times over.
Not so much these days though now I have almost completed all I ever set out to collect in the first place.

All else now is merely a bonus for me, and for those I won't be lining the fat cats pockets too often, that's for sure!
