Boy its been a strange week [Roll Eyes] but today on Facebook after replying to an old photo of a garage I once worked at in 1971-73 in Paisley, Scotland as a mechanic. I got a reply from a lady who said her brother once worked there. To my surprise later he also replied. This person was one of eight teenage apprentices while I was there, who started at 15yrs. but my biggest surprise was that he remembered me, and sometimes wondered how I was doing in NZ, so it was really nice to catch up after all this time. I often wondered how those apprentices got on after I left, as the charge hand that they worked under was not a nice person, so I used to stick up for them at times.

You would think that after 44 years people would forget you, but they dont....amazing [Smile] ....thanks Facebook [Smile]

So true Bill [Smile]

Over this weekend I have been exchanging news and stories from the past. [Smile] In all my jobs since I left school at 15 years in 1967 its the people you dont forget, not the work itself. It was common to leave school when you turned 15 years and get a job. Apprentiships started at sixteen and with high unemployement in that area back then, any job was better than none. The service manager in that garage I got on really well with, but it was that chargehand below him who gave the apprentice mechanics a hard time. I had words with him, over the way he treated those kids many times, he was downright nasty. In the end after another bust up with this person I walked out and when I came back to get my stuff the next day one of those kids said the boss would like to speak to me. Strangely they wanted me back, as walking out of a job is usually final. I turned the offer down, but as I left one of those apprentices came to me and asked if I was coming back. It seems they, the apprentices had got together and had asked the boss to offer me my job back. I thanked him for doing that, but also reminded him, that without any union backing and high unemployment they themselves were were taking a risk.

I often wondered how they got on, as shortly after I got on the old tub "SS Australis" and sailed around the world to NZ..

That's a really nice story Graham. Being able to catch up with people you have not seen in a long time can be special because sometimes you find out that you made a difference in their life somehow. I personally do not do Facebook but it's not all bad as you have demonstrated. It can be very fun and rewarding.
