Hi all, I’m new to this forum, I have been reading for a few weeks now and overcome with the need to join in. I’m a full-time computer programmer with a love for film and editing.
I’m combining two of my favourite things here, editing video with old SGI (Silicon Graphics) systems using discreet products like SMOKE & FLAME and transferring media to digital.
I’ve got professional VHS, BETACAM, BETAMAX, DVCAM and even CVS players/recorders, and have for the past just focused on video formats, analogue to digital and then editing them.
My father back in the 70’s had a CINE camera and projector (which I have now, a BELL & HOWELL 1623X no sound along with the white canvas [thing]) and this is the bit that I’m loving, messing with film prints. Just running them so far, but I want to go further.
I have purchased a EUMIG Mark S710D & a Hanimex SR8600 so far, and all work fine. I have also obtained a few films & items:
Tom & Jerry ‘Posse Cat’ – Silent-Super8–B&W-(My Fathers)
Tom & Jerry ‘Two Mousketeers’ – Sound-Super8-Colour
Tom & Jerry ‘The Milky Waif’ –Silent-B&W-Super 8
Tom & Jerry ‘In Tee for Two’ – Sound-Super 8-Colour.
Walt Disney ‘Three For Breakfast’ -Unknown--Super 8 -Colour
Walt Disney ‘Pluto’s Playful Pranks’ -Sound-Super 8-Colour- Large 16.66Mins
Walt Disney ‘Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh’ -Sound-Super 8-Colour-Large 16.5Mins
Walt Disney ‘No Sail’ -Unsure about this one, holes look same as super 8? No info on box, very small.
Walt Disney ‘Knight For Day’ -Silent-8MM-Colour (suspect above is the same?)
Hanna Barbera ‘The Great Grape Ape’ -Sound-Super 8-Colour
Hanna Barbera ‘Scooby Doo Terror at Circus’ -Sound-Super 8-Colour
Warner Bros ‘Silvestro’ -Sound-Super 8-Colour
Warner Bros ‘Bunny’ -Sound-Super 8-Colour
Warner Bros ‘Foghorn Leghorn’ -Sound-Super 8- Colour
Warner Bros ‘The Lions Busy’ -Sound-Super 8-Colour
Universal 8 ‘Emergency 4 – Fire At Sea’ -Sound-Super 8-Colour
Walton Films ‘ Charlie Chaplin Greatest Comedies’ -Silent-Super 8-B&W
Walton Films ‘Dr Who & The Darleks pt 1’ -Sound-Super 8-Colour
Castle Films ‘Frankenstein’ -Silent-Super 8-B&W (My Fathers – Cost £4.99 in 197[?] no 1081)
Mountain Home Movies ‘ Horror -War of the Planets’ -Sound-Super 8-B&W-Rubish story line.
Derann Home Movies, this is full of Lyons advertising ice-creams.. promotional film.
Also have some film cement, no idea how old.. probably illegal now along with all the legal high’s.
And some cutters, joiners..
I also like Vinyl ,music etc, have some Sony Telecine recorders and what not.
So.. my plans, well having read a lot from you guys, I will be trying out a reflecta scanner (about £400 from Amazon? Advice on that is good) and also, I will be trying out a mirror telecine device (on the way) I think (recorded from my many devices). It seems if I am correct there is no definite answer as to what is best at the moment, I have some dvcam video camera setups plus other recording devices I can try out. It will no doubt be a long interesting journey.
One thing though that I have read, including from companies that do transfer, is the ability to produce perfect flicker free HD type results. Well for me, I think the flicker is the whole part that takes me back to my father running the film, and then having us in stitches while he runs them backwards.. It was awesome. I like the flicker.
My father has plenty of film he would like converted and I’d like to get it done before he pops his clogs. That may sound a bit harsh, well firstly I have a terrible sense of humour and secondly, it’s true, I am against the clock.
So, my first port of call is cleaning.. my reals do seam very good no Vinegar etc, but it would be nice to give them a clean before I start. Any advice appreciated on that and where in the UK to obtain the fluids? Maplins?
Also, I read tonight, running a sound strip film through a non-sound projector is bad? Is this true?

Many kind Regards Mark, and thanks for listening.

Welcome, Mark.
You'll find plenty of talk on the Forum.
You can, of course, ask questions, and you will get the answers.
