Anyone know of a source for adapters to use 9.5 spools on a 16mm rewinder?

Posted by Edwin van Eck (Member # 4690) on March 03, 2015, 09:57 AM:

We currently have an adaptor for super8 reels: http://shop.van-eck.net/?_globalsearch=sf-0279

I will check if I can make an adaptor for 9,5mm reels.
Keep you posted!

Thank you, Edwin, this sounds promising.

Edwin, if you could also make 9,5 clips (to keep the film on the reel, like in super 8), that would be miraculous. I don't know if that has ever existed at all in 9,5 (I know in 16 mm it has but these clips are hard to find).

Posted by Edwin van Eck (Member # 4690) on March 03, 2015, 12:37 PM:

16mm clips are already in production. We are now with version 3 and optimizing it. Hope to have it on the market soon.

9,5mm clips whould also be no problem. It there is demand for it, I will put it on the project list.

Great news !

Hi Maurice, Much depends on the spindle diameter of the rewinder. If a 9.5mm spool will slide on the spindle it is possible. My Thomas rewinders have adapters to enable 9.5mm. They are simply a disc with a square hole which fits over the square section of the rewind spindle and pins to fit into the offset holes in the spool.
I dont know of any other commercial adapters. Ken Finch.

Posted by Edwin van Eck (Member # 4690) on March 04, 2015, 01:18 AM:

It will be not this easy on a 16mm rewinder. The spindle diameter of a 16mm rewinder is bigger then a hole in 9,5mm reels. But I think we can make a design to solve this.

Posted by Maurice Leakey (Member # 916) on March 04, 2015, 02:48 AM:

A 16mm spool has a square hole approximately 8mm across, whereas a 9.5mm spool has a round hole approximately 6mm in diameter.
An adapter needs to be very similar to the one Edwin already makes for using Super 8 spools on a 16mm rewinder to which gave a link.

I made an adapter that uses a 16mm reel with extra holes drilled to attach the 9.5mm spool.....it's a bit strange but it does the job.....

here's the link to the post....

So far it has worked well....until a better idea comes along [Smile]

Maurice
If you use a 16mm Muray rewind then it is easy. The 16mm adapters simply slide off which enables the 9.5 reel to fit onto the spindle. I got a local engineer to make the slide on adaptor. I can't get the hang of posting photos (why is it so complicated?) otherwise I could show you the adaptor he made for me. Maurice if you want to pm me with your email I can send you some pictures.

Of of our engineers came up with a brilliant design (I think).
It is now being printed. Hope to have the first results to show in 2-3 weeks!

Als we have made a new design for the super8 adaptors using strong artificial fiber and 3D printing. Also sent to the printers now.

Maurice, I can confirm what Terry Sills has stated. The Muray rewinds are part of the 16mm equipment I have listed. Also contains a Muray viewer (has some bits missing, have still to check it out to see if it is useable. Ken Finch.

Any new film related item is a great new. When it is about 9.5, it is even greater. Back to the 9.5 film clips dicussed above, how many pièces would you need to sell to make the project happen ?

Many thanks, Terry, but my 16mm rewinders are Rigby Premiers. One with a square shaft, the other with a round shaft (this one also accepts standard 8 spools.)

But I wonder how many I will sell .........
The market for these speciality products is very small. I hope to break even in some time with the 3D design. It is costing a lot.

I am certain you will benefit in the long term Edwin from all of your investments even though we are a small batch society by our very nature.

I would imagine making and designing each prototype for the first time is the hard and costly part.

Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on March 11, 2015, 02:34 PM:

I share the same hope than Andrew. It takes time to advertise things as more people than we one thinks have no access to Internet.

Posted by Edwin van Eck (Member # 4690) on March 11, 2015, 02:47 PM:

Yep, without internet it is quite hard to cost-efficiently sell niche products around the globe I think. Especially with a fast changing catalogue.

1) how to reach this audience without internet?
Maybe some advertisements in video/film magazines. Which?
For a global reach you will need a lot of advertisements.

2) how-to in depth inform?
Send a paper catalogue via snail-mail?

3) how to process orders?
Via a paper order form?

3) how to get payed?
The costs for international non-electronic banktransfers are crazy.

Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on March 11, 2015, 02:58 PM:

Another problem is that people don't talk English. There is a potential number of people indeed hard to reach. Advertizing in magazines is probably a good idea (I have no idea about the costs). People also tend to talk each other. I talked last month to a French repairman and in the conversation I mentionned the fact that you manufacture pieces for projectors and he showed interest for that. I will see him next week and ask if he looked at Internet (I know he's not a fan of that).

Keep up the good work Dominique, we all need to support Edwins magnificent unique efforts in this day and age to secure the future for our ever aging equipment.

Edwin
If you can produce an adapter to use 9.5mm spools on a 16mm rewinder I am sure that the magazine of Group 9.5 would be able to print an article on your new part introduction.
Their magazine is called 9.5 and is published each quarter.

Referring to what I was saying to Dominique above.. that is fantastic advice Maurice!

Don't forget to modify your Beaulieu with the M2 nut. This could save you an awful lot of heartache in the future Maurice!

Chris
How does the 9.5mm spool stay in place on the adapter?
Will the adapter fit on 16mm rewinds which have a square shaft, and on others which have a round shaft?

Posted by Chris de Gruiter (Member # 4744) on April 07, 2015, 05:09 AM:

This model only fits on the ones that have a square shaft, we're currently revising the design and we'll look into the possibility to make it fit both shafts.

It's good to see Edwin now advertises these new products on ebay. E Bay gets tremendous viewing figures no matter what we all feel about it. Just about any high priced film has always made its high price from reaching the biggest possible global audience via e bay.
Therefore I feel this can only be a good thing for Edwins future sales.

I'm currently doing a short trial on Ebay to see if it improves the reach compared to our webshop. If it works out well, I will consider to open an E-bay shop as well.

Great Stuff Edwin!! [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

I would like a similar set of adaptors to those 9.5 ones photographed above made if possible for Super 8mm reels. These would then be an alternative for my Spondon Long Play Unit. (It's featured on another post here today)

It would still require the same 16mm square fit rear ends to the adaptors, but I like the idea of the locking clips you have made for them rather than having to wind a knob on and off the threaded ends of the Spondon as is currently the case.

Please see photo on today's post Edwin.

Having looked at the 9.5mm spool adapter it seems that the locking arrangement for the spool relies on the rewind having a turn-down key.
If I am right, this precludes their use on a Rigby Premier rewind which relies on a small spring within the spindle to secure the spool.
Can Edwin confirm my belief?

Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on May 07, 2015, 04:29 PM:

You're right, Maurice, you need what you call a "rewind having a turn-down key". The key has to be let "closed" (as if there was a spool on the rewinder) to put the adaptator on, there are two slots so the adaptator is well fixed. But has you guessed, you cannot use it on other models (like the Thomas rewinders for example). The system is ingeniuous. A little warning I would like to do for people having a Latin mind like me : I ordered an adaptator and received ONE adaptator (not two). That must be a Germanic vision of things (what can you do with only one piece of a system that needs two ?) as Bolex in Switzerland do the same : if you order a guide roller for an Eumig projector, you actually receive a half piece (as they are not made of one piece...). Better to know. I will wait to have another item to order to get my second adaptator (as there is no emergency).

Posted by Edwin van Eck (Member # 4690) on May 08, 2015, 02:25 AM:

Hi Dominique,

Good to hear that the adaptor is working fine. We are looking into making the adaptor more general, so that it fit's on more 16mm reel holders.

When I brought this to the market I was in doubt whether to put it as a set on sale, or seperate items. I think in most cases you will need two. But to keep the price low I sell these now a piece. But of course I can change this!

That's good news from Edwin for owners of other rewinders.

I purchased a set of the brass machined 16mm to Super 8mm adaptors to improve my Spondon Long Play Arms.

I have to say, they are superb. Made to an extremely high standard and at a fraction of the cost of very similar products sold elsewhere.

I would thoroughly recommend these or the cheaper 3D polymer alternatives to anyone!

Posted by Edwin van Eck (Member # 4690) on May 09, 2015, 03:08 AM:

Yes, the brass reel-adaptors work fine. However we recently also launched a more cost-effecient 3D printed version of these (PP-0038-S). We have tested these now for some time and these also work very nicely. The advantage is that these do not fall off the rewinder easily, when changing the film and the price is also more attractive! Hi Dominique,

You mean such a 16mm clip?
 -
This is is ready and being tested in a FOA (First Office Application). This is how we called a first customer at my previous employer Ericsson. I wait for feedback and when it is ok, I will put it for sale!

Is this the kind of clip you mean?
Also for 9,5mm?

Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on June 22, 2015, 04:37 PM:

Yes, the clip that holds film ,on the spool. I have no idea if that has ever existed for 9.5. It would be fantastic if you could manufacture them.

Thanks for the info, Ken. I've never seen or hear about 9.5 film clips. Maybe it was sold only in the UK. For the history of the gauge, it would be interesting to know who manufactured these clips. Grahame Newham no longer sells overseas, so I will wait for the new production.

The 9.5 adaptator mounted on my 16 mm rewind arms. Due to variations in the holes sizes from one model of reel to another, I had two reels I couldn't put on the adaptator but this isn't specific to 9.5. I faced the same problem with some super 8 spools not fitting my Beaulieu or my long play attachment unit. As I have two other 9.5 rewinders, I didn't try to force the spools by pressing too much so I don't know if at the end they would have fit. I don't think it should be a good idea to redesign the adaptator with thiner holding sticks as they need to hold firmly the reels which they do for most of them.
 -
Here you can see the ingenious system used to make this adaptator. The interest of converting the rewind shown on the picture is that you're not limited with the distance between the two parts and that's a great advantage when you "Filmguard" the film as there is more time for it to dry. In my case, these adaptated rewind arms are also lighter and are perfect to work on the table of my balcony. The only limit is the reel sizes but for someone who would have only this pair, I believe it would be easy to make a diy system to be able to use larger spools if needed.

Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on July 19, 2015, 05:49 AM:

Well, I talked two days ago about différences between spools spécifications and guess what ? Today, I tried to put a spool on my big rewinders and it didn't hold correctly. So I tried on the Edwin's adaptator and the spool matched perfectly. Another evidence of the interst of having different kind of material :-)

Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on July 19, 2015, 07:46 AM:

You are so correct Dominique.
As said previously I use only quality spools on the Beaulieu namely Posso, Beaulieu, Elmo, Bonum, Gepe, Sankyo and Schneider.

Using only these reels you will never have any issues Dominique with reels fitting anything but perfectly on the Beaulieu.

With regard to Super 8mm spool adaptors used on either Spondon Long Play units or 16mm rewind arms with the square drives as their hub,
I haven't found any reels that WON'T fit onto Edwins brass Super 8mm adaptors that I purchased from him in this past year.

They are produced to a very high standard and the only way I felt they could be improved upon, was by fitting a M2.5 grub screw just to secure them to the brass square hubs of the Spondon unit.

I drilled and tapped mine and they are now a permanent fixture on my unit. Thoroughly recommended!

Hi Thanks all for the good feedback!

Next our brass super8 reel adaptors which you are referring you, we have now also a nylon version of the super8 reel adaptors. All reels fit to these adaptors (like the brass ones do), but they have 2 adventages over the brass ones:
1) they are cheaper
2) the material is a bit flexible, so that the adaptors will not fall of the rewinder.

Our film technicians prefer now the nylon ones over the brass ones. See: http://www.van-eck.net/itable.php?lang=nl&size=0&cat=rewinder&merk=105&type=Rewinder%20film

I don't understand each word of each sentence so what follows is just a guide. To make it easier, I put the time of the video in front of the transleted sentences. hope it can help you Janice. (0-0:10)Well. Let's explain how the different adaptors are used on different kind of films can be used (I didn't understand the word but obviousely it's the 16mm rewinder seen on the table) . (0:12-0:14)We start with the 9.5 mm adaptor. (0:17-0:29) It's special to put it on. Edwin explains what how to put the adaptor on the arm as you can see on the picture, it's tpp technical for me to translate but the video speaks for itself at that moment I think. (0:30-0:36) Then you can put the 9.5 mm reel on. (0:42-0:44)To remove : like this. (0:46-0:52) You have the other adaptors. You have the super 8 adaptor. (0:56-0:58) Super 8 spool. (1:10-1:13)The double 8 (standard/regular 8) needs just a small ring (1:25-1:31) And the 16 mm spool for which it was made for can be used without adaptor. (1:37)Here we go.

Most of the movies have English subtitles. The movie with the reel adapters, actually do not need a lot of subtitles, the images speak for itself!

Great new ! I know it is impossible to manufacture new items at the price of second hand but I noticed the 16 mm are very expensive compared with the super 8 ones. Do you already have an idea of the price of the 9.5 clips ? I can't wait to see them.

Posted by Edwin van Eck (Member # 4690) on July 22, 2015, 07:28 AM:

printing using industry quality 3D printers is currently not cheap. The price is to a large extend determined by the size of the object.

Price for 9,5mm clips is not set, but they will be cheaper then the 16mm clips, as they are smaller.

Hi Dom and Edwin etc. I think the clips produced by Larry pearce were injection moulded red plastic. They had LGP raised lettering on them and were sold in small clear plastic bags. Good to see our favourite gauge is not being neglected. It will be interesting to see the u.k.price of the new ones. The cheapest substitute I have been using is a strip of white card! Ken Finch.

Wonderful news Edwin! Is this now quieter running than the previous prototype one you very kindly sent me and is the surface finish of the cam now smoother?

I shall order one tomorrow Edwin as there are a few other bits and pieces you have recently produced on your 3D printer that I could use. E.g. S938 Mag Head clip and the Bauer framer repair kit just in case I ever need it.

Is there any progress regarding the long play unit Super 8mm rollers Edwin? The ones I submitted photos on here for including all dimensions?

About the CAMS. The surface is slightly smoother. But the main improvement is a redesign of the nok (the small part on the film-taker (grijper in Dutch)). This reduces the noise level a lot. A bit more noise then the original ones, but a very good improvement on the previous version!

Till now we have extended the live of 3 of our filmscanners (based on Bauer T610 projectors), which all had worn out CAM/nokken. We replaced these with the new 3D printed ones and are running fine again!

Fabulous news and very well done indeed regarding the Nok!

I shall be placing an order tomorrow once you bring to market.

If I were to remove an amplifier board for you to test and repair (one channel has fault somewhere in the pre amp), would you be able to do so as a separate circuit board or do you need the full machine Edwin?

if you are 100% sure that the error is in the applifier board and I have the same projector here then we can do that. But, in general it is better to have the complete projector for E2E testing. Shipping to the UK is also not so expensive.

It was more to do with the courier handling I was concerned but no worries Edwin, I will send the complete machine.
I shall look into shipping it when you are back from your holidays thanks.

Wonderful to have a another new item in 9.5 The clip is on a full 800 m (2400 ft) reel. It is also useful to hold films which were mounted on the other side you want them. This happens sometimes in 9.5 as some projectors have the "Pathé Baby system" (the film leaves the feeding spool an the left when you look at it from the control side of the projector and other projectors have the "modern system (the film leaves the feeding spool like in the other gauges (like on the Buckingham).

These clips are so useful ! I screened a film that had two reasons to leave the spools : the spool was full and the film had been mounted on the wrong side. Using a clip to hold the film while manipulating the spool helped a lot. Thanks again, Edwin !

Hi Dominique, thx!

We are now also working on manufacturing new reels with the latest modern techniques like 3D printing and laser-printing metals. The idea we have is to make this as generic as possible. e.g. the possibility to have the inner core and reels interchangeable. E.g. you can re-use a reel on a 8mm core on a new 9,5mm core, etc.

Are there for 9,5mm films also cores available (like on 8mm and 16mm) where you need a "steckspulle" te play these films on the cores on a projector?

I never saw or heard about that on 9,5. On super 8, I only came across of some optical films mounted on a core.
