You learn every day. I discovered that André Ligonie, who was a famous 9.5 activist, converted a limited number of ST 1200 to 9.5. I hope the Lucky owners of such machines know how Lucky they are to have such machines !

I have never heard of an 8mm machine being converted- I wonder if he kept them as auto thread or whether that facility was disabled? Of course there was the Heurtier Tri Guage, but I've never seen one in the flesh.
I know that Eiki's were not the only 16mm projectors to be done though. I have heard of (though not seen) Debrie D16 and RCA Hollywood conversions. The late John Ferrari owned an RCA 9.5 which he used at the Harpenden event sometimes.

Or, if you technically proficient, you could make your own 9.5mm projector!
In issue 160 of 9.5 magazine in "Letters to the Editor", there is a photo of a 9.5mm projector made by the writer's father some time during the war years.
At quick glance it looks very much like the 16mm GeBescope L516. However, the projector does not seem to have included any sound scanning. It was built to accommodate home movies. Even the spools were built by the writer's father.

Terry, I saw many years ago (the price was still in francs) an Heurtier P 842 converted to 9,5. I sadly had not the money to buy it :-( The auto-thread is not kept on converted machines.

Look back through you old 1970's cine magazines and you will see it advertised and was converted from the old Raynox sup 8 proj.

I should have been more specific in my reply. What I meant was 8mm to 9.5mm sound conversions, which I assumed Dom was referring to with the ST1200 conversion. Talking of silent projectors though I have a Ditmar dual 9.5/16 which I consider such a clever design, incorporating two gauges alongside each other, but must have been expensive to manufacture.

Terry, the interest of converting a silent machine to 9,5 is, in my opinion, hard work for few advantages as there are already on the market plenty of good silent 9.5 projectors that often need only to be serviced and have a lamp conversion.

Terry ... I too have the Ditmar 9.5mm/16mm projector which I agree is a clever projector however mine smokes like a train so I cannot use it, I tried running it for ages to burn off what is smoking ... But didn't make any difference! It's something to do with the excess oil or something??

I don't know why that should be but it can only be related to the motor or the lamp and they are quite easy to strip down, so it should be fairly easy to identify. I hope you resolve it because they are a lovely machine and fairly rare and sought after.

I purchased a debrie a couple of years ago that has been converted to 9.5 tried it with a film and it ran ok ,but never used it since may sell at price its in great condition ,if I have room in the lorry I may take it to blackpool

I did put my Ditmar 9.5/16mm up on a shelf out of sight a while ago because of the smoking!
It wouldn't have been so bad except you could see the smoke fumes in the projected picture!
I will have to look at it again and try and isolate the source/reason for all that smoke!
I will probably end up taking it to my bro-in-law who helps me with re-wiring etc [Smile]

I got a copy of an ad for an Elmo converted to 9,5 but not a ST 1200. From hat I see from the not so good scan quality, it is a ST 180. The ad says that both tracks can be used in 9,5. THe copy was scanned by the owner of the machine : the President of the French club !
