I've recently purchased a Pathe Baby projector as a gift for my son. I'm new to antique projectors and would like to find out more about this unusual projector. For one thing, it is missing the hand crank, unfortunately, and I'd like to find a replacement. Any suggestions as to where to look? Also, now that I've been bitten by the bug (didn't take much ;-) ), I'd like to get a compatible camera. Which Pathe cameras are compatible with this projector? Thanks.

Welcome to this forum, Karin ! The camera that was sold at the same time of the projector, was this one : http://www.vieilalbum.com/CameraPatheUS.htm Later, a model with a motor appeared and then of course many other models were made. The Pathé Baby is the one to look for if you want to display a camera beside your projector but of course if you want to shoot film, I would suggest you a more recent 9.5 camera. I have no reference at the moment for a crank but you should be able to find one.

Hi Karin and Welcome! There are about 3 Pathe' cameras on Ebay right now. Most are usually not in good condition. The ones in fairly good condition will obviously be pricey.

I don't know of any one that is re-manufacturing the handcranks. So you will probably have to search out another Baby being sold for parts.

If you are looking to just have the projector for display then it doesn't have to be working. I'm guess even if you had the hand crank the shutter on your Baby wouldn't turn. New shutters are available...but challenging to install. I have a non-working one I display and also use for spare parts. However...I have a very nice working Pathe' Baby that I restored with a new shutter and a converted lighting system. The old plate system is very dangerous.

They are just beautiful little machines even just for display...real treasures.

Good luck with yours.

Thanks for the replies! I'm not sure what he is going to do with this projector. I figure I'll give it to him and let him decide what to do. But I thought it would look better with the hand crank. It's also missing the Pathe Baby medallion, which looks to have been soldered on. So, I think a parts model would be a very good idea. Can newer cameras that shoot 9.5 mm film be used with this projector? Or does it have to be a camera that has a specific type of spool which would fit in the projector slot? Not sure of those terms [Wink]

Karin, any 9.5 film will pass through your projector but of course you will need to put it in Pathé baby cartridges. I would however not recommend to use a Pathé Baby to project regularly. There are many other models that are more suitable for that (be prepared to have a dark picture with a Pathé Baby, if you have the proper bulb).

Another question: the projector has 2 sets of initials on it, one PB-EX and the other DM. The EX stands for export, I think, but what does the DM stand for?

I'm not sure that Ex is for export (I think it's for removable gear cover). Hopefully someone will be able to answer. D is a model but I don't know what DM is.
