Moderator's Note: This digest is a Super 8mm print of Philip's digital edit. He commissioned to have this printed in Italy.

This Super 8mm 600' digest of A L I E N from 1979 covers many of the high points of this landmark film.

We start with the search party landing on the planet where the ALIEN eggs are. We see the egg chamber and Kane's investigation. The face hugger explodes out of the egg and covers Kane's face. Then we move onto where the face hugger has detached from Kane's body. Everyone is happy and ready to go home. So why not have a big dinner to celebrate the return to the "ol' freezer-rino" as Brett (Harry Dean Stanton) coins it?

No sooner do they settle in when we have the ALIEN emerging from Kane by bursting out of his chest. It scampers away and the crew immediately begins to look for it. Then one by one Captain Dallas, Parker, and Lambert are dispatched by the the ALIEN which has grown very big. During all of these deaths we learn that Ash is an android with murderous intentions toward Ripley who realizes what the corporation has done to them - bring back the life form at all costs-crew expendable. Ash's dismembered head reminds Ripley that she "has his sympathies... ".

Finally we end up with the final sequence - Ripley having enacted self-destruct on the Nostromo heads to the shuttle to escape the explosion which will not only take out the Nostromol but the ALIEN too. But the ALIEN is smart and hides aboard the shuttle. This scene is very much intact from where the ALiEN's arm juts out from the conduits where Ripley is working. A great JUMP scare. Ripley then uses are smarts until she blasts it out into space and roasts it with the shuttle's engines.

This is another film I have wanted for many years on Super 8mm. From the first time I watched the 200' color KEN FILMS digest that just ends when the chest burster runs away!!! What?? Where's the rest of the movie?!? Running time is 30:04. Picture Sound and Color are all excellent. This is printed on low fade Kodak polyester stock. The film is presented FLAT with black bars at the top and bottom. Please excuse the pictures from my iPhone. It's a dark movie and these snaps do not do the projection justice.

    Thanks for looking!!

Lovely to look at, Phillip! (Disclaimer: I have already seen the film as a digital file previously), The lab did an excellent job with this. Nicely saturated colors, but then he has the tech to push the envelope when it comes to color, so, unless the film naturally has a bluish caste to the color, the print will tend to literally look like well shot, saturated Kodachrome. Thank you for the review.

I smile when I see these tiny pictures saying how good the prints are.
OK. Let's put them up on a 10ft screen at the Blackpool convention along with the new traditional prints which are coming from The Reel Image at full frame 1K.
Show us all thd full quality. What resolution are you getting ti promote S8?

Why dont you put a full video up including sound instead of the small images?
Show the full frame why the snapshots all the time.
Lets hear the quality sound quality.

When the Reel image 22 minute edit merges with the Dorun 12 minutes you will have a traditional S8 release.
It will also include a free very spooky trailer bringing it up to a 36.minute reel a first in the 21st century.

Thank you friends for the mails after.my cancer diagnosis i appreciate the good wishes so much.

I will be upping the final episode of Alien off screen with Stereo sound a total of 36 minutes.
It will be the longest 1K full resolution S8 film in history.

Hope you’re better Lee. Regarding this discussion I will only say that I don’t understand the statement that Andec prints have a bluish cast… that’s simply NOT true. Alice is not bluish, the 80s music videos are not bluish and I could continue…
Second, I still don’t understand why someone who accepts gifts for good reviews is still allowed to speak out on this forum doing “reviews” (!)….

Regards to all forum members and all the best to you, dear Lee.

Lee, I find you comments regarding other people’s Super 8 releases to be derogatory. You act as though only your releases and The Reel Image prints are worth considering and the others are crap. I don’t believe this to be the case, Phillip’s Super 8 print of Alien looks great to me. Perhaps these releases are better than yours? And you don’t like the competition.

                Annoyed Super 8 collector.

Hi everyone! - I had the ALIEN print created because I was unable to acquire Lee's 200' ALIEN print offered a while back. I asked to be put on his list so that when the print arrived I could pay for it. He indicated that would be fine and told me an estimated date of arrival. The date passed by and since I did not hear from him I sent an email to see if they already arrived. Lee simply informed me that all the prints were sold and shipped out. Nothing set aside for me. A quite dismissive response that would not win any 'customer service' awards anytime soon.

So, I decided to create my own digest and have Italy do it for me. The price was right for me and the quality of the print for me is excellent. Would it stand a test comparison side by side with an ANDEC print on a 10 foot screen? - to some yes and to some no. It's a moot point for me since my screen is 40 inches wide and stands on a small tripod. Not the greatest reflective quality either. It is what it is and that is all I have room for and can afford at this point. But hopefully someday I can become a FILM GOD like some and own better equipment 😉!

The bottom line is I am happy with it so that is all that should matter to all of us collectors who want to enjoy this hobby? Right?

If or any reason someone would like a copy please Private Message me and I will have to order for you. Price is $375.00 plus shipping - wait times can be lengthy. 50% down. Balance due when print is ready.

                    Philip,

First, thank you for taking the time to create these digests for two VERY desirable classics. Many collectors haven't the ability to do this themselves, so it is fantastic that you have taken the initiative to do so. Along with Steve Osborne's, Lee Mannering's, and Ruben's offerings, it is great to have yet another option for Super 8 prints!

Second, thank you for your insight on the projected image size with these two new prints. Certainly, with your screen size the image appears quite nice. Your thoughts on how it might look on a much larger screen (like 6-12 feet) are also helpful to those evaluating a purchase.

I spoke with Steve Osborne last night to get his thoughts on this. Steve did feel like when projected on a larger screen, there were noticeable differences compared with prints that were created with a 'true' negative.

Steve is a true champion of the film hobby, and I don't think ANYONE would ever consider him unfair or self-serving in an effort to promote his own releases. Philip's digests are no doubt a cost-effective, great quality option which will meet the needs of numerous film collectors with more modest screens.

I share this perspective in the spirit of helpfulness, and I am in no way trying to demean anyone. Look into all the options and find what is best for you.

                    Best Regards,
                    Greg

Yes, I was the one who visited Steve in Ohio a few years back and showed him my JAWS 200’ digest produced in Italy. He said at the time he did not think it was as sharp as the ANDEC prints projected at that size. To me it looked fine but after seeing the Count Dooku and Yoda light saber battle - another short digest from ANDEC - I do admit that print looked EXTREMELY sharp on Steve’s large screen. Perhaps the source was better and at a higher resolution? Was it sourced from 4K? Is it because it was shot on digital film and produces sharper digital copies? Don’t know. Could be. But at the end of the day I project on such a small screen in comparison - for me- it looks absolutely fine.

Producing your own Super 8mm print in Italy is a relatively inexpensive path for someone who wants something that doesn’t exist on Super 8mm. Going it alone with ANDEC is quite expensive and most of us cannot afford that. So, it’s always good to have options. And mileage will vary . . .

I recently worked with another collector on a 200’ digest of the Frankenstein Monster story from HOUSE OF DRACULA. We all know the Castle Films produced HOUSE OF DRACULA and THE WOLF MAN’S CURE on Super 8mm digests based upon this 1945 monster mash. But they did not cover the Frankenstein Monster story. Years ago for fun I created RETURN OF FRANKENSTEIN as a ‘what if’ edit that Castle Films might have done. This other collector commissioned me to produce this on Super 8mm for him. To keep costs down I went to Italy and had these made for our enjoyment and private home use. He made neat homemade boxes and we now both have this little 9 minute film in our collection. He was very happy with the results. Fun times!

Thank you for your kind comments, Greg. Long live Super 8 !!

I still find it amazing that all these options are available in 2025.

Incredible efforts by everyone I’d say.

Super 8 is alive and full of many passionate people that love the format! Very thankful to see new prints out in the world.

I hope you enjoy your Alien print, Phillip! I was very lucky to buy the full feature in scope a few years ago, but I hope you love your digest print for many years to come. Best wishes.

As Lincoln shared, it is so wonderful that there are options out there, whether Lee, Steve, Phillip, the list goes on and on. I can vouch for Phillips work. I have mentioned it before, but I have Phillips "JAWS" 10 minutes digest, ( or is it 9 minutes? ), and I love to blow up that image well over 100 inches, more like 150, on a large white wall we have, and it doesn't look bad at all. I think that there might be the slightest difference in sharpness compared to the Andec print, ( if anyone has the time, that would make a great topic/post, with screenshots, of course ), but the difference is so marginal, that the average viewer wouldn't even notice. I remember being awed at how sharp some optical sound features were back in the day, but the level of sharpness that can actually be attained on this Kodak Vision film stock of today, in my opinion, can exceed what was attained in the past.

                              Good evening ,

After having read the message above I ask Douglas Metzer publicly: Really Douglas? After all that you know (and that many other forum members have witnessed) you allow “this” on the forum? I have published 5 top titles in just one year with acknowledged quality, expending loads of money, my own money… loosing all of it just for the love of Super 8 and I have to witness and suffer the absolute lack of ethics of those who are allowed to publish and LIE here. I have witnessed myself some of the prints that supposedly look as good as mine (and the merit is not only mine, who provide the master materials but of the German lab that does a great, great work)… What? Excuse me?... It doesn’t matter if the screen is large or small, I have seen it. Please don’t lie. Things are what they are and YOU KNOW. Even now some dare to promote their product doing reviews of their own releases, putting even their prices (!)… Really, Douglas? That’s enough. No ethics, no morality, no fair play, no honesty.
They even talk about copyright when they try to attack me and they don’t know nothing about it, they just want to threaten me, ignoring that with such discurses put Super 8 releases in danger right now. Is that what you want?
If things work like this on this forum, without any active action against this individual I won’t publish any longer here.
