Hi all.

The rubber seal around the shutters on two ST-1200's started to decay & fall off within a spectaularly short space of each other. There's still messy lumps of it left on there, so trying to run them is a disaster. Does anyone know of a way to fix this? It might be the easiest thing in the world, but I've never ventured this far into the mechanics of it all.

Jimbo mate, you clearly dont read FFTC or this forum too often, there are fixes for this, You'll get a couple of replies with reference to removing the remaining rubber etc, if you wish i can send you copies of two remedies which i wrote about in our mag, please give me a shout on my e mails, [Wink]

Hi Jim,
I had the same problem on my ST1200HD. Id cut most of the rubber off with a scalpel and then used paint stripper to remove the residue. I applied the stuff to the edge about an inch or 2 at a time and then removed the lumps etc that way. After I got most of the rubber off I used a very fine abbrasive paper and turned the shutter by hand to clean the edge up again.
Yes you will get a very slight drop in speed but this should not be noticed in normal use.
BTW Earlier ST's didnt have the rubber edge to the shutter so it's quite OK to run without it.

If you do find you wanted to go a little further simple belt replacement as well does seem to bring the speed back to what it more or less should be as the new ones are nice and tight where the ones on there now,altough running fine, will be slightly stretched so if you get three new belts after removing the remaining rubber you should be ok.
A permanent speed fix is a modified lower pulley but at the moment i only have three enquires and to get a new batch i have to get at least 10-15 but you should be ok with the advice from kevin and as i say just to improve 3 new belts> [Wink]

Hi Jim I had the same problem with my ST1200HD I sent it to Irv to fix and he removed it all so it is ok to run it with out it it is just a little bit noiser to run. [Smile]

Is is possible to superglue a nice thick rubber band or something to the shutter to make up for the lost rubber original?

I wouldnt worry about the loss of the rubber. Elmo made 1000's of ST's without it. As for the slight under speed, I'm sure you wont really notice it. I have removed the rubber off my ST1200HD and it's running just brilliant. I didnt notice any increase in running noise in fact it has less vibration due to the fact that there isnt now differances in thickness of the rubber round the shutter.

Tony, watch Channel 4 nxt week and see what to do with dead bodies!!!!
I'm not so sure about gluing any rubbers on the shutter, you never know what it may do to the main two clutch drives! Seriosly, i was told that Mr Moss has found a company to make a rubber band for this purpose but i think useing the wrong adhesive or the wrong type of wear quality would do much more harm than good, thats one of the reasons why my new 24fps drives were a little pricey, they do the job and do it properly and have the wear qaulity to last. SO THERE! [Big Grin]
