Jim,

I see these old private and personal home movies up for sale and always wonder why do people buy them? Anyone?

Best,
Rick

Ricky, I would buy if someone selling home movies covering my home town especially the years when I grew up (1970-1980).

So that is one of the reason to buy other people,s home movies.

Other reason may include:

- Archival value
- People who love fashion or interior design
- People who love to see old cars or equipments
- Directors who want to include some footage on their films (usually in flash back scenes)
- Simply want to use as film leader [Wink]
- etc, etc

Wilbert,

Interesting, I didn't realise the value in these! I guess it's pot-luck what the footage is like and how well it's shot. Recycle your films sounds a good idea, I may start a collection point [Wink]

Thanks,
Rick

I think it is also fun to see the backgrounds in the films, stores, buildings etc. Travel pics are fun to see things like Disneyland 40 years ago, Coney Island etc. It's photo history by amateurs.

These look like they were very nicely shot and cover a nice range of travel and family subjects.

Sad that with all of the people shown in the photos, none will have these bequeathed to them. Hard to imagine that none of those people pictured would be interested in seeing these.

Well maybe they do want to see them but the films could have just slipped away with other stuff at a sale or auction. Some family members might think about "the old home movies" when they are already gone.

Also sometimes when films are transfered over to tape or DVD the films are discarded as being "fragile or out dated" [Frown]

It looks like these home movie bundles sell better in the UK than in the US. Here is a recent UK ebay sale for far fewer reels that realized a far better price.

It didn't hurt that most of the envelopes are yellow. Also maybe the competing buyers were intrigued by a 'school fate'

Indeed John. I recently purchased a Eumig P8 on Ebay for £7.50 which I'm very pleased with. It arrived with 25 reels of standard 8 home movies which I've viewed on the projector. They were shot by someone who obviously knew his/her way round a cine camera, and due to the kindness of the Eumig to the films, are all in excellent condition and complete with Kodachrome envelopes. I wasn't sure what to do with them but after seeing these do so well on Ebay I think I am now.
