I've got a Kowa 8z lens in perfect condition and gives great scope images,What would be a fair price these days for it? Mark

Hello Mark

Search for Kowa 8z (or Kowa 16h) on Ebay and filter the results to show sold items and I think you will be surprised to see the amount they can fetch.

I get the impression you want to be fair to real cine collectors rather than make as much as possible from the DSLR crew - just remember, as I found out in the recent past, if you go too cheap the buyer may well then list it for the maximum on Ebay as soon as they receive it.

I also have one for sell and I'm selling mine for a undermarket price. If you want what it's worth, you might as well just sell it on eBay.

If you want to sell it for a little less than it's worth, you should probably add a few stipulations to the transaction such as that you will only sell it to a collector on this forum that you know will use it for scope projection.

Just watch out for the ebay sellers costs, they appear to ripping everyone off at the moment. Im querying some now. I'm sure they make up as they go [Mad]

Yes, it's worth remembering that eBay and PayPal take 13.8% between them, so you will only realise £346.20 on a £400 sale, for example.

That's why it can be much more beneficial for all to sell on the forum. Plus, there's a better chance that what you sell will go to someone who will value and appreciate it.

I'm all for trying to make sure those that receive these sought after cine items are genuinely interested in the real film side of the hobby but have experienced a number of occasions where the buyers expressed such happiness at finally finding their 'must have' print, projector, lens, etc. which was really only purchased with a view to resell quickly at profit. There are such vultures circulating on these forums and elsewhere in the film collecting community & weeding them out is a challenge. Yes of course once sold the owner is entitled to do what they want and resell it is a free market but ethically questionable to do this to friends in the hobby.

There is a current (started today 5th November) four day promotion on Ebay UK where you can list any item and the maximum seller fee will be £3 - so for anything that sells for more than £30 you will save money, potentially a lot of money if a lens sells for £400 which will cost £37 less than their usual fees.

Is Kowa 8z (or 16h) par with Elmoscope II...or even they are just the same lens? (rebadged).

Hello Winbert

They are the same size and look to be the same internally - made by Kowa then changed somewhat to meet Elmo or Bell & Howell specifications - the Elmoscope II has a warmer looking yellow coating than the Kowa 8z / 16h, but the same coating can be found on the Kowa 16h Bell & Howell version.

For cine projection I would rate them all the same, for filming (not my area of knowledge) they will vary due to the coating differences - this is an interesting DSLR filmakers take on the differences:
